Kirk Dillard or A. Ghani? Peter Roskam or Leslie Coolidge? Judy Biggert or Bill Foster? A guide to the ballot choices for Congress, state senate, county board and more.
The presidential race has become increasingly contentious over the last few months. For most voters who will hit the polls Tuesday, choosing the next president is the most important ballot they will cast. But, locally there have also been a few races garnering strong local interest. Constituents with an interest in the race between Peter Roskam and Leslie Coolidge have shared letter after letter on Patch. Roskam, the incumbent, was given several opportunities to debate Coolidge, including a request from Patch to participate, but he chose not to meet his challenger. Judy Biggert, the incumbent in the new 11th district, is said to be neck-and-neck with her challenger Bill Foster. Rudy Giuliani stumped for Biggert during a trip to Chicago. …

Wheaton Patch accepts and publishes letters to the editor emailed to Local Editor Charlotte Eriksen at Charlotte@patch.com, or sent as a message through the Wheaton Patch Facebook page. Please note in subject lines the message is a Letter to the Editor. ------------ A Letter to the Editor: Why has Peter Roskam refused to debate his challenger, Leslie Coolidge for the IL 6th congressional seat? Perhaps he can’t defend his record. A record of extreme ideology and partisan gridlock that was harmful to our economic recovery. A record of putting pledges to lobbyists (Grover Norquist) above duty to constituents. Peter Roskam voted twice for the “Ryan Budget”. A draconian budget which cuts necessary programs, including veterans’ benefits and …

A week before the election, poll shows less than a point difference between the 11th Congressional District rivals.
A new poll shows Democratic challenger Bill Foster leading incumbent Judy Biggert by less than 1 point in their battle to represent the new 11th District. Professional polling firm We Ask America released the results of an automated Oct. 28 poll showing former 14th District Congressman Foster leading the seven-term Republican 50.4 percent to 49.6 percent. According to the poll, which sampled more than 1,300 likely voters, the candidates were tied among women, while Foster had a slight — as in 2-point — lead among male voters. The race between Biggert and Foster has been a contentious one, with the two accusing each other of negative campaigning and Foster taking aim at Biggert over a controversial ad released by the National Republican …

Foster campaign claims four out of five Chicago TV stations initially refused to air attack ad by National Republican Congressional Committee.
The 11th Congressional race has taken a nasty turn, with Democrat Bill Foster claiming that four out of five Chicago TV stations initially refused to air an ad by the National Republican Congressional Committee, according to CapitolFax.com. A former congressman, Foster is facing Republican Congresswoman Judy Biggert, who is seeking an eighth term. The 21-second ad accuses Foster of personally profiting during his time in Congress, where he represented the 14th District from 2008-2010. “Foster got the parachute, you got the crash,” a voiceover intones during the ad, which claims that Foster sold investments a day after “a closed-door briefing in Washington about the financial crisis.” The Foster campaign called the ad “a clear attempt to …

Joe Biden and Paul Ryan sparred on Thursday night over domestic and foreign policy issues in Danville, KY. Who do you think won tonight's debate?
Most voters will probably agree that tonight's vice presidential debate was far more interesting than last week's first round of presidential debates this election. Both candidates came out swinging and didn't let up. Get news in your inbox. Sign up for the Patch newsletter. Like Naperville Patch on Facebook. The next debate returns the focus to presidential candidates Barack Obama and Mitt Romney at Hofstra University in New York on Tuesday, Oct. 16. The debate begins at 8 p.m. Central Standard Time. Here's what some of our Facebook fans had to say: Lynn: Biden challenged Ryan on the lies and non-answers. He was schooled. Douglas: What's interesting is it seemed so obvious to me. Martha had an agenda and it was not to be independent. …

Rep. Peter Roskam is unable to attend Patch, League of Women Voters candidate forum due to a prior commitment.
Rep. Peter Roskam (R-Wheaton) on Friday notified the League of Women Voters (LWV) of the Palatine Area he will not be able to attend an Oct. 11 candidate forum in Palatine because of a previous commitment. Last month, Patch partnered with the LWV to invite candidates in the Illinois 6th Congressional District race to a candidate forum at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11 at Palatine Village Hall. The invitation was the group's second attempt to host such a debate, after Rep. Roskam was unable to attend the Oct. 4 event. Candidate Leslie Coolidge (D-Barrington) previously accepted the Oct. 4 and Oct. 11 invitations. Patch covers more than a dozen towns in the 6th District, including Algonquin-Lake in the Hills, Barrington, Crystal Lake-Cary, Darien…
