Lynn Hudoba: Sexual Abuse and the Developmentally Disabled

The Penn State scandal raises awareness of predators who target at-risk and vulnerable children.

Like everyone else, I watched in horror last week as the events unfolded in the child sex abuse scandal at Penn State. For parents of young children, it is unfathomable to contemplate something like this happening to your own child. Unfortunately, it is more common than we’d like to believe. Statistics show that around 15 percent of children are sexually abused before the age of 18. For girls, it’s more like 30 percent. And for developmentally disabled girls? 83 percent.  83 percent? 83 percent. Since this is a Patch opinion article, and not a research white paper, I won’t be footnoting the source for that statistic. But I could. It’s a statistic that I’ve heard thrown around a lot since I became the parent of a developmentally disabled …

What nobody really thinks of is the fact that children often abuse each other. All the abuse cases I personally know about happened between kids. Speaking out about it does not help. People freak out at the idea and immediately hide behind the "they are just kids" excuse.   more ›

Glenbard West Grad Guilty of Sexual Assault

A former GBW football player will serve at least 16 years behind bars for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl in a parking lot in 2010.

After four days of testimony, a former Glenbard West football player was found guilty of sexual assault. Demarco Whitley was found guilty on four of five charges on Thursday, Oct. 6 during a Cook County bench trial. Judge Thomas Fecarotta said Whitley’s testimony on the witness stand was unconvincing. “I found that his testimony was unbelievable and poorly contrived,” said Fecarotta. Fecarotta went on to say that one of the elements he found most convincing in concluding Whitley was guilty was that there was “not one bit of conversation” while in the car, “I don’t think I heard a hello.”  Whitley’s bail was revoked and he was immediately taken into custody. Fecarotta will sentence Whitley on Nov. 1; Whitley will spend at least 16 years …

Emotional Testimony Opens Whitley Trial

Girl claims two former Glenbard West football players forced her to have sex while in a church parking lot.

Described as bubbly and outgoing, the 17-year-old girl struggled to keep her voice high enough for all the adults in the room to hear. Fighting back tears at one point, the Rolling Meadows High School senior maintained her composure for nearly two hours as she recounted the January 2010 night when two former Glenbard West football players forced her to have sex with them inside a car in a secluded church parking lot. “I was yelling and crying and telling them to stop,” the girl testified Monday, referring to Pierre Washington-Steel and a second person Steel called his cousin. The “cousin,” according to prosecutors, is Demarco Whitley. His bench trial on five counts of sexual assault opened Monday, Oct. 3, before Cook County Judge Thomas …

Woodridge Man Charged With Sexual Assault of 11-Year-Old Girl

The man's bond was set Wednesday at $500,000.

A 20-year-old Woodridge man has been accused of sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl, officials say. Paul Darrah, a spokesperson for the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office, said Jose Chagala, 20, of 2600 Forest Avenue, was arrested Tuesday and charged with predatory criminal sexual assault of a child. Darrah said Chagala worked as a maintenance man in the apartment complex where the girl lived and first saw her as she would walk to school. He gave her gifts of jewelry and perfume, Darrah said.  Kate Croteau, management analyst of the Woodridge Police Department, said local officers assisted with the man's arrest. However, the DuPage County Children's Center, part of the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office, took the lead in …
