Schiesher Fifth Graders Raise More Than $2,500 for Kenya Connect

The students learned about African culture and raised money to benefit students in Kenya.

from District 202 The Schiesher Elementary School fifth graders have done it again!  For the third year in a row, the students have participated in a service learning project for a non-profit organization called Kenya Connect.  This organization builds and maintains schools in Kenya and encourages personal relationships between the students by offering a pen pal program.  Over a five week period, the students have learned about the country, people, land and cultures of Kenya, Africa. Speakers, as well as a Zumba teacher, came to our school and gave the students an introduction to African dance when we kicked off the program in November.  The students were hooked on this project immediately and as an end result truly came through for the …

Catch Schiesher Student Art at Chicago Botanic Garden

The students participated in the making of Treewhispers with guest artist and DuPage Book and Paper Arts Guild member Cheryl Mahowald.

from District 202 Last year, when Schiesher third grade students made paper from pulp and recycled papers, we had no idea we would be included in an international exhibit! The Treewhispers exhibit at the Chicago Botanic Garden is made up of paper “tree rings” from artists and children all over the world. Our third graders are a part of this group! Funds from our LEHSO and Artsonia paid for the materials and guest artist and leader Cheryl Mahowald, who is a local artist and founder of the DuPage Book and Paper Arts Guild.   Third graders made two kinds of paper. They made cotton pulp paper rectangles for book covers. These little books were used for their notes and observations when they went to Fullersburg Woods.  They made circles from …

Observations From the Editor

People Patch Got to Know

Here's a recap of interesting residents, business leaders and students that we met during our first three months of publication.

Lisle Patch is barely three months old but we've met so many great community members already. The majority of them suffered through my long explanation of what Patch would be when it launched; others have been sources for our news stories. But a great many of them have been the news subjects themselves, and today I'm providing a definitive list of the people we got to know in 2010. The list was intended as a Top 10—one for almost every week of publication. But about one-fifth of the way through our 40-plus pages of news articles it occurred to me that 10 spots were far too few. Personally, I think it's more important to showcase everyone who deserves recognition. We all have our unique stories. I'm quite grateful to the batch of people …

Got Character?

The Lisle Character Counts Alliance announces its bi-annual Pillar Award winners.

Character counts in Lisle as seven citizens earn Pillar Awards, which will be awarded at the Lisle Village Board meeting tonight. Twice a year, the LCCA (Lisle Character Counts Alliance) Pillar Awards committee accepts nominations for members of the community that commits acts that are in line with one of the six pillars of character. The pillars are defined by the Institute of Ethics founder, Michael Josephson, and they are Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsiblity, Fairness, Caring and Citzenship. Founding members and Lisle residents Deb Pallardy and Pat D'Angelo have created a lasting impression when they formed LCCA and championed Lisle to be a Character Counts! community. While they no longer participate on the LCCA committee, they have…

Lisle Elementary HSO Raises Funds for Programming With Clothing Sale

Childrens' clothing and accessories benefit Schiesher and Tate Woods.

The Lisle Elementary HSO hosted 150 sellers at this weekend's Lisle Elementary Clothing and Toy Resale. The event is a chance for residents to both re-sell their gently used children's goods and find items they need. The sale included clothing items for newborns to junior sizes, as well as maternity items. They also sold toys, video games, books, strollers and bicycles. Not only did the number of sellers increase, but the crowd also hit record highs. According to HSO members, the line to get into the half-price sale Saturday afternoon stretched out of the building. "Ticket room volunteers had to be pulled to work the shopping floor because the demand exceeded the normal schedule of volunteers," said Laura Tchakanakis, a mother, HSO board …
