No Direct Elections, No Gambling: 2012 Illinois Republican Convention

Despite impassioned speeches about opening up the Illinois GOP, the Platform and Resolutions Committee voted against sending the return of direct elections for state committeemen to the floor. Read our live blog transcript for more details.

Update, 10 p.m., Friday, June 8, 2012  Illinois Republicans hoping to have more of a say in the state party's processes will have to wait another four years for another swing at it. While McLean County Republicans Chairman John Parrott rallied the packed room at the Platform and Resolutions Committee meeting Friday, during the Illinois State GOP Convention in Tinley Park, the votes fell short for direct elections of state committeemen and won't go to the full delegate floor Saturday.  Those in favor of the election said it would energize the state's Republicans, bring them back into the process and eventually turn Illinois back to red. Democratic Candidate Ben Lowe Seeks Illinois 6th District Congressional Seat

Democratic candidate Ben Lowe is running for Congress in Illinois' 6th Congressional District against the odds, but, for Lowe, it's how you run the race that matters.

Ben Lowe's campaign office in Lombard is sparsely furnished. There are a few desks, some signs on the walls—and not a whole lot else. But, you can't spring for things like furniture when you're running a grassroots campaign against a powerful incumbent. Especially not when the Democratic Party you are running for has provided no support and you've pledged not to take money from Political Action Committees, unions and lobbyists. According to Ben Lowe, it's not a matter of winning at any cost, but rather running the right way. "We're relying completely on small donations from individuals," Lowe said. Al, I do agree with you about applauding Ben's candidacy, but I respectfully but wholeheartedly disagree with your statement about Ben living in Never, Never Land. I believe the far left and far right both are equally off-base. To me, the constant divisive language Peter Roskam uses puts him on the same level as Nancy Pelosi.
