Whether you are a mathematician or a pizza lover, today you can celebrate Pi(e).
Pizza. Apple, cherry and rhubarb. Charlie Brown’s head? What all of these things have in common is Pi, the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. Today the world over mathematicians, pizza lovers, fruit and savory pie eaters along with Peanuts fans can come together in celebration over the Greek letter π, also known as 3.14159… Why Charlie Brown has been called a block head when his head clearly has the roundness of a circle has not been solved through mathematics. But, the search for Pi, not the fruit kind, began back around 400 B.C., Richard Wilders, department chair and professor of mathematics at North Central College has said. Archimedes was one of the first to try to solve the riddle. Though a circle seems like such…

Can you taste the difference? While Lucano's Pizza & Catering offers several similar items to the Barraco's menu, customers can expect more than 20 new additions (including double dough pizza!).
Did anyone notice the change to Barraco's this weekend? The owners of the pizza place at 2950 Ogden Ave. recently ended its franchise agreement with Barraco’s, and re-launched as Lucano's Pizza & Catering this past Friday. “We wanted to stay in the community, but just change the name,” said owner Alex Dreznes. The restaurant offers delivery and catering of its full menu of pizzas, pastas, and sandwiches. (Carry-out is also available, of course!) Dreznes said that while customers can expect several familiar items, they were able to lower menu prices since they are no longer paying franchise fees. There was a tweak to the pizza recipe that earned Barraco’s the title of Lisle Patch reader favorite, but Dreznes said customers have reported …

“The old concept was dated and we wanted to shake things up some,” the owners says. The restaurant celebrated its grand opening on Thursday evening.
With a “snip” from a giant pair of scissors, Pizzeria Bombola became the newest restaurant in Lisle. The restaurant takes the place of Pete and Johnny’s Tavern and Grille, 2901 Ogden Ave., which opened 13-years ago. Restaurateur John Skoubis, who was a partner in Pete and Johnny’s, said they shifted concepts in order to appeal to a wider clientele, specifically families. Since the restaurant re-opened under the pizzeria concept, Skoubis said he’s noticed a steady flow of families dining there. “We want people to be comfortable and casual when they dine with us,” Skoubis said. Skuddlebutts Pizza and Catering of Glen Ellyn and Downers Grove ordered a ton (literally) of cheese to prepare for the football weekend.
How much cheese does it take to feed a village on Super Bowl Sunday? Skuddlebutts Pizza and Catering of Glen Ellyn and Downers Grove ordered a ton of cheese in preparation for the annual sporting event, when many Americans are expected to chow down. To prepare for the many feasts throughout the area, Skuddlebutts stock piled 40 boxes filled with bricks of cheese all of which weighs approximately 2,000 pounds. "We really have to be ready for anything to come in," said owner Danny Glover. Last year 146 orders came in at the Downers Grove store, 65 of which were deliveries. Since Glover recently opened the Glen Ellyn location it's difficult to estimate what the demand will be on Sunday but with a ton of cheese Glover is prepared for a very…

Super Bowl Sunday may not actually be the biggest day of the year for pizza sales, but it's always in the top five, says Jeremy White, the editor-in-chief of Pizza Today magazine. “Halloween, the day before Thanksgiving and Super Bowl Sunday are all big days for pizza,” White said. “It varies from year to year, with New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day rounding out the top five days." At any rate, White is certainly a big advocate of ordering a few pies to enhance your Super Bowl viewing enjoyment. “You definitely want to have pizza and a few good drinks on hand to avoid any letdown in game,” White joked. At the risk of sounding cheesy, White gets right to the crust of the matter when it comes to pizza and offers these tips. Check out these …

We asked, and a ton of you answered! Now find out which Lisle pizza places are at the top of residents' speed dials.
First of all, thanks to everyone who voted in our pizza poll this last week! While the Best Of series is designed to celebrate your personal favorites, perhaps another reader convinced you to try something new (or at least, out of the norm). So, who wins? Much like in our Best Of Breakfast winners from last week, the most popular choices come in three's. Customers of Barraco's, Evviva!, and Passero's battled it out throughout the week for the top spot, with leads as little as 10-15 votes. Thanks to a shout-out from the Lisle Convention & Visitors Bureau Facebook page, a last day surge of votes actually made the race closer! Barraco's retained the lead against Evviva by a mere four votes; Passero's came in just another handful behind. (…

A meal staple for children, college kids, and people who really, really love cheese. So where do you make the call?
Patch wants to know who Lisle residents designate their 'go-to' village businesses. Voting closes at 5 p.m. on Wednesday for ‘Best Of’ Breakfast Spot. Make sure you’ve cast your vote, and don’t forget to check back for the official winner on Thursday morning! This week’s topic: pizza. That not-quite-Italian, not-quite-American dish remains beloved by most, and there’s no shortage of both chain and family-owned options nearby. While the village said goodbye to Vini in 2011, Pizzeria Bombola will be making a 2012 debut. Where do you purchase your pie? How to vote Choose your favorite option from the poll below through next Wednesday morning. For purposes of keeping the contest manageable, only establishments within village limits are …

This strip mall pizza joint has a lot of everything: menu options, seating, bacon and community spirit.
Looks can be deceiving, and this is especially true with Passero’s Pizza. It is so much more than a carry-out pizza place in a strip mall. And, if you are driving by 5328 S. Main St., it is easy to miss. My family and I were surprised to find an extensive menu, multiple televisions, game room for the kids, beer and wine for the parents and an owner who cares about the community. Originally opening in 1980 and having ties at one time to Papa Passero’s Restaurant in Westmont, manager Matt Siuda has seen some changes. “I started working here in 1993 and haven’t looked back,” said Siuda. “I enjoy coming to work everyday and especially enjoy the smiles on all the kids' faces when they walk through the door.” Owner Jignesh Patel bought the …
