Naperville Unit School District 203 board members discussed state pension reform issue as well as changing next year's graduation date at Monday's meeting.

Even though Illinois lawmakers last week failed to find a solution to the state's $83 billion pension deficit, Naperville Unit School District 203 officials said they have prepared budget projections for whatever “gets thrown” at them next from the state. At last night’s board of education meeting, members discussed ways to maintain a balanced budget despite the uncertainties surrounding the state’s ongoing pension issue - an issue that is set to come up in Springfield again this summer. “There are ways of coping with some of the unknowns that we have for the future and still making our budgets balanced into the future, and we have time to accomplish that,” said District 203 Chief Financial Officer Dave Zager on Monday night. “Probably no …

Heroin Doesn't Discriminate, Police Say

The heroin epidemic is growing in the suburbs and it effects every type of family regardless of social status or wealth. The drug doesn't discriminate.

Parents who think they have a child who may be involved in drugs should act on their gut instincts. Don’t just snoop, be a cop. That was what parent Amy Miller told a packed audience of parents, children, teachers and community members attending a drug forum Thursday night at Neuqua Valley High School. Miller’s daughter Megan was 18 and a senior at Neuqua when she died Jan. 29 from a heroin overdose. “Don’t pick your battles, fight them all,” Miller said. “When the health and wellbeing and life of your child is at stake you have to do everything.” Miller was a participant at the Community Forum on Drugs. Indian Prairie School District 204 and Naperville School District 203 partnered for the programs. Another forum was held earlier this …

All Day Kindergarten Put On Hold for District 203

Board of Education did not take any action on all day kindergarten during Tuesday's meeting at Naperville North High School.

Parents of District 203 students will have to be a little more patient on waiting for a decision about all day kindergarten. Citing areas of “unanswered questions,” such as the amount of state aid the district will receive and the overall financial impact of enacting an all day kindergarten program, Superintendent Mark Mitrovich recommended the decision be put on hold. “It is my recommendation of the board, at this time, that any final decision on all day kindergarten be delayed until this fall,” Mitrovich said at last night’s District 203 Board of Education meeting, held at Naperville North High School.   District 203 currently offers a half-day or two-and-a-half hour program for kindergartners; however, some officials believe a shift to …
