Lisle's Capital Management Accused of Defrauding Clients

The firm run by the Dushek father and son allegedly committed "cherry-picking" misuses of client funds that netted them $2,000,000 in illegal profits, the SEC claims.

A Securities and Exchange Commission fraud complaint has been filed against Capital Management Associates Inc. of Lisle, an investment advisory firm run by Charles J. Dushek and his son Charles S. Dushek, the Daily Herald reports. According to the paper, the SEC complaint alleges that the Dusheks netted $2 million in unlawful profits by running a "cherry-picking" scheme from 2008 to 2012 in which they defrauded clients by assigning profitable trades to their own accounts—and dumping losing trades onto clients, frequently senior citizens. The paper quoted an SEC release claiming that the firm "placed millions of dollars in securities trades without designating in advance whether they were trading personal or client funds." The release also …

Best of Craigslist: Blackhawks Drink Machine; Own Village Greens’ Scoreboard

Check out some of the most interesting posts we were able to find for Naperville, Lisle and Woodridge on Craigslist this past week.

The following items and postings were found on Craigslist for the Naperville, Lisle and Woodridge area. Note: Patch has no control over the status of these posts on Craigslist and how long they remain available. Dispense yourself some appropriately ice-cold drinks from this Blackhawks-themed vending machine, with slots for four different beverages (bottles or cans,) plus additional storage in the stand in the back. All the satisfaction of a vending machine, without that pesky part where you have to pay for it (or, at least, you collect your own payment later.) Going for $450 out of Woodridge. I golf at Village Greens a fair bit, and I can attest that the ad space on the club’s scoreboard is highly prominent. Now, for just $20,000, you can …

Lisle Residents Vent Flood Frustrations at Meeting

About 200 residents showed up to a meeting this week with a series of complaints about the Village's handling of the mid-April flooding that has impacted many lives.

About 200 residents filled Trinity Lutheran Church on May 9 for a meeting about flood relief and recovery in the Village of Lisle, a meeting that turned into a display of residents' anger towards the Village, the Chicago Tribune reports. According to the paper, residents spent the two-hour meeting asking why they were ill-notified of flood danger, and expressing frustration that their limited options seemed to be either destroying or elevating their houses or accepting county buyouts. "I'm angry," the paper quoted Debra Schulz, a Four Lakes resident, telling the Board. "When I was evacuated, the firemen said it would be 'three days, now get in the boat.' I was then told it would be two weeks, and then a month. And now I'm told it will be …

Your Take: Local Police—What Do You Appreciate?

It's Police Week in the United States; in that spirit, we asked our local readers in DuPage County what they appreciate most about their local force.

Did you know that this week—May 13-20—is officially Police Week in the United States? According to PoliceWeek.org:  In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, DC to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice. In the spirit of the week, we reached out to our DuPage County readers on Facebook and asked what they appreciate most about their local police departments. Here’s some of what readers shared with us:  Carol Gog: “Back in the nineties, I locked my keys in …

Best of Craigslist: Literal Ball and Chain; Hiring Pro Pooper-Scoopers

Check out some of the most interesting posts we were able to find for Naperville, Lisle and Woodridge on Craigslist this past week.

The following items and postings were found on Craigslist for the Naperville, Lisle and Woodridge area. Note: Patch has no control over the status of these posts on Craigslist and how long they remain available. Ah, matrimonial bliss! … or is it, really? If perhaps you think your newly-wedded friend is locking in his pick a bit too soon—or if you just want to make him laugh—this $30 fake ball ‘n’ chain from a Naperville seller might be the perfect gift from a best man. It’s just sand-filled plastic, though so probably not recommended for actually locking down prisoners or wandering husbands.  Think your job is a load of, er, dung? How about a career change to a job that is literally loading dung? That’s right, it’s your dream job: …

Lisle Resident, Benet Sophomore a Rising Acting Star

Grace Etzkorn has a recurring role on ‘Chicago Fire,’ recently won a Chicago teen pageant and regularly promotes a drug-and-alcohol-awareness campaign.

The acting career of Lisle resident Grace Etzkorn is starting to take off, with the Benet sophomore now having played roles in a national musical, appeared in several commercials, won a Chicago pageant and scored a multiple-appearance role on the TV show “Chicago Fire,” the Suburban Life reports.  According to the paper, Etzkorn has been acting since she was 10 years old in a Chicago show, then touring with “Annie,” doing voiceovers for Walmart, Radio Disney and Nintendo, and winning the 2013 Miss Chicago Outstanding Teen pageant; her role on the new show “Chicago Fire” is as burn survivor Sophie in two episodes so far.  “I haven’t really grasped the fact that I’m on national TV yet,” Etzkorn told the paper. “It makes me feel proud I …

Advice for Upcoming Graduates from Lisle Residents, Leaders

Adults from around the Village—who have been there—share the best advice they received at kids, and what they’d advise from their own experiences.

A number of Lisle adult leaders and residents, ranging from local high school authorities to the Village’s business owners and writers, offered their advice to students who will graduate this month in a Daily Herald article published on Monday.  "When you consider careers, make sure that whatever you decide to do is something you think is more important than anything else,” Lisle High School principal Peter Sullivan told the paper. “My parents talked to me on the occasions of my graduations about working to find things that were important to me in my life.”  Benet Academy Dean of Students Marty Wiora told the paper that his academic adviser at Northern Illinois University “simply looked across the desk at me and said, 'Work; don't worry…’ …

Best of Craigslist: Slice of Bulls Floor; Creepy Mannequin Torsos

Check out some of the most interesting posts we were able to find for Naperville, Lisle and Woodridge on Craigslist this past week.

The following items and postings were found on Craigslist for the Naperville, Lisle and Woodridge area. Note: Patch has no control over the status of these posts on Craigslist and how long they remain available. This authenticated slice of the Chicago Stadium floor was in use from the late 1980’s to the early 1990’s, which means, yes, this was the regular stomping ground of His Airness himself, likely the very floor where the 1992 championship was won in Game 6! For that kind of memorabilia, $350 to this Lisle seller may well be a deal. Okay, I realize that “creepy” is a judgment call on my part, but the “natural, dark wheat-colored toasty finish” on these disembodied torsos just makes them look to me like they’re being filmed through a …

Lisle Groomer Opened Shop to Dogs Waterlogged by Flood

The Hand ‘n Paw grooming salon in the Lisle downtown opened its doors after the storm to offer free DIY grooming to the owners of dogs who got smelly in flood waters.

Humans weren’t the only ones affected by the flooding that swept through Lisle in mid-April—many pets were temporarily left in apartments during the rescues, and others took ended up taking dips in the less-than-pristine floodwater. The latter issue is one that downtown grooming salon Hand ‘n Paw tackled during the crisis two weeks ago when the shop opened its doors to offer free do-it-yourself dog washes—typically $16—to residents whose dogs may were soaked in the flood, the Suburban Life reports. “We just had a ton of dogs coming in after the floods hit town, and many of them smelled awful. We think it was from some of the sewage in the flood waters,” Beth Hand, owner of the groomer’s shop, told the paper. “We figured it was just …
