Hey Mom and Dad: Would You Buy Your Kid a Car?

Parents, Patch wants to hear from you on the questions that get families talking.

A couple of weeks ago, we asked parents if they had any rules for their new teen drivers. Of course, before those teens can be drivers, they need something to drive! Having your own car is one of the ultimate teenage status symbols (as Marty in Grease sang in "Summer Nights," "Like does he have a car?), but every parent has his or her own rules on how their rapidly growing-up bundle of joy should obtain that coveted set of wheels. Which brings us to this week's Hey Mom & Dad question: Take a look at what people had to say and join the conversation in the comments section. Sharon Crowder: "They should buy the car on their own—or do as my wise husband told our kids. He told them that he would buy them a used car when they could pay for their…

What, and miss out on the currency of loaning my car out to my kids? Nobody gets outta here with the keys to the car without picking up a few dishes, folding some laundry or at least giving Mom a big hug.   more ›

Hey Mom and Dad: What Curfews Do You Set for Your Teens?

Parents, Patch wants to hear from you on the questions that get families talking.

Welcome to "Hey Mom and Dad"—a weekly feature in which we ask our Facebook fans to share their views on parenting. Every week, we get the conversation started by taking a look back at a question we asked parents the week before on Patch Facebook pages from around the area. Most teens love to stay out late with their friends, a habit upon which many parents prefer to keep a certain degree of limitations. Mom and Dad tend to know better about when their kids need to get some sleep, after all—and when there's liable to be less reason to be out. Which brings us to this week's question: What curfews have you set for your teenage children, and how do you enforce them? Take a look at what people had to say and join the conversation in the …

Hey Mom and Dad, How Much Allowance Do Your Kids Get For Their Chores?

Parents, Patch wants to hear from you on the questions that get families talking.

Welcome to "Hey Mom and Dad"—a weekly feature in which we ask our Facebook fans to share their views on parenting. Every week, we get the conversation started by taking a look back at a question we asked parents the week before on Patch Facebook pages from around the area. Many parents assign their children certain chores or other duties around the house in exchange for a regular allowance as a good way to instill work ethic and responsibility. But the range of money paid and work performed can vary significantly from house to house. That brings us to this week's question: Take a look at what people had to say and join the conversation in the comments section. Julie Hallock Howard: We take a hybrid approach. Our philosophy is that chores …

My girls earn an allowance ($3-$5 per week) only if they complete a chore that they select and were NOT asked to do. Cleaning your own bedroom does not count unless you do a major overhaul or some serious purging. They don't have a whole lot of need to purchase things for themselves hence the small payout. It's a lesson on developing initiative and being solely responsible for earning your money.   more ›

Hey Mom and Dad, What Worries You Most About Your Children's Future?

Parents, Patch wants to hear from you on the questions that get families talking.

Welcome to "Hey Mom and Dad"—a weekly feature in which we ask our Facebook fans to share their views on parenting. Every week, we get the conversation started by taking a look back at a question we asked parents the week before on Patch Facebook pages from around the area. That brings us to this week's question: Take a look at what people had to say and join the conversation in the comments section. Donna Campbell: Fear children becoming "friends" with the wrong type of kids! — Batavia Patch Facebook Julie Wlodarski Bruns: Just being happy. Between the stresses of school and sports and the competitiveness they seem to have now and bullying, I just want them to know that them being happy is all that matters. — Elmhurst Patch Facebook Amy De…

Though I'm not a parent (thank God) I would probably say the quality of life from cost of living to the air they breathe is what would worry me most. We need to start fixing the problems now before they get too out of hand to handle!   more ›

Hey, Mom and Dad: Did You Tell The Kids Who You Voted For This Election?

Parents, Patch wants to hear from you on the questions that get families talking.

Welcome to "Hey, Mom and Dad"—a weekly feature where we ask our Facebook fans to share their views on parenting. Every week, we get the conversation started by taking a look back at a question we asked parents the week before on Patch Facebook pages from around the area. Elections and the associated politics can be difficult for young minds to grasp. Still, it's hard to imagine last week's election went unnoticed by our country's young citizens and it's safe to bet they had some questions about the process. That brings us to this week's question. Take a look at what people had to say and join the conversation in the comments section. Dawn Conde Burghardt: Yes I did tell my daughter who I voted for. I have always told her. This election was…

Paula and I didn't say how we voted, but I'm sure both our daughters pick up plenty of clues by our comments and observations. We have a new voter in the family this year, so we went over the ballot, candidate by candidate, so that she knew what to expect in the voting booth. In the end, she made her own choices, and I'm pretty sure all three of us have split tickets and none of the three Nagel …   more ›

Paulette Delcourt: Don't Shortcut on the Stairs

How speeding up slowed me down—for a little while.

My husband knows that my version of Feng Shui includes moving impossibly large objects around the house like chess pieces. I always claim it’s to create more harmony in the house, but really I’m just bored and looking for something to do. The only thing I haven’t tried to move is our grand piano. Let me rephrase that: The only thing I did not succeed at moving by myself was the grand piano. As soon as I figure out how to flip it on its side without the lid opening, it’s gone. A few weeks ago I was up to my usual tricks when I found myself in an unusual situation. I was moving a small bookcase end-over-end up my stairs when mid-flight I got stuck. By stuck I mean I had the heavy object perched at a 45 degree angle, with no means of moving …
