Humane Society: Lisle's Puppy Parlor Pet Store Linked to Puppy Mills

A dozen Chicago-area pet stores were listed in an undercover investigation released Tuseday by the Puppy Mill Campaign for the Humane Society of the United States.

A dozen Chicago-area pet stores—including locations in Lisle, Downers Grove and Aurora—have been listed in a puppy mill investigation conducted by the Humane Society of the United States. The Humane Society said Tuesday that undercover investigators visited 12 stores over a three-day period in October, and found many are linked to inhumane commercial breeders known as puppy mills. During the visits, employees at the stores denied selling animals from puppy mills, but documents showed otherwise, according to the Humane Society. Investigators also discovered that eight of the 12 stores were in violation of Illinois' pet shop disclosure law, which requires stores to post visible information about the animals and their breeders, the Humane …

Court Watch: Bail Reduced for Man Accused of Sexually Assaulting Wheaton Girl

Here's a roundup of recent developments in DuPage County Court Cases

Downers Grove: A 20-year-old Downers Grove man has pleaded guilty to aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a teen girl in 2010. Daniel Bashaw was charged last year with fondling and having sexual contact with the girl during July and August of 2010. In a plea with prosecutors formalized this week, Bashaw was sentenced to 90 days in the DuPage County Jail, two years of probation and is required to register as a sex offender. Bashaw, who will surrender to the jail on April 10, is also prohibited from having contact with anyone under the age of 18. Prosecutors dropped a second sex abuse count as part of the agreement. Court Watch: Attempted Puppy Thief Faces Retail Theft Charge

Recent developments in DuPage County court cases.

  Elmhurst: An April 27 hearing has been set in the case of a man accused of exposing himself to a young girl in 2010. At that hearing, Priyang Parikh will ask a judge to suppress evidence prosecutors have related to the incident at an Elmhurst banquet hall during a wedding. Parikh is charged with attempted predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and sexual exploitation of a child. Prosecutors tried to have Parikh's suppression motion thrown out with a hearing, but a judge recently denied that move. Naperville: A woman accused of trying to steal a puggle puppy from a Naperville pet store has been indicted. Dissatisfied Happiness Is Pets Customers Continue to Step Out

A Chicago attorney is expecting the class action suit against the pet chain to grow stronger, according to a report from the Naperville Sun.

  Six individuals are currently part of a class action suit against Happiness Is Pets stores, alleging they purchased dogs from the store that later developed serious health issues, according to a report from the Naperville Sun. The Chicago attorney defending the group told the Sun his list of clients will likely grow. Read the full story.   The chain has locations in Downers Grove, Lombard, and Naperville. At least one dog diagnosed with canine distemper died, according to the Humane Society of the United States.

Puppies Sold at Naperville, Downers Grove Pet Shops Diagnosed with Canine Distemper

The Humane Society of the United States said anyone who recently purchased a puppy that appears ill should check for distemper.

The Humane Society of the United States said it confirmed that two puppies recently purchased from a pet store with locations in Naperville and Downers Grove were diagnosed with distemper. One of the puppies died. Happiness is Pets sold the puppies in December and early January, according to a news release from the Humane Society. “Canine distemper is potentially deadly and is highly contagious to other dogs,” HSUS Illinois State Director Kristen Strawbridge said in a news release. “We need to get the word out to the pet-loving public who may be inadvertently exposing their pets to this virus by coming in contact with one of these puppies at a dog park or handling or buying a puppy from the Happiness is Pets Naperville or Downers Grove …

This article is NOT about the HSUS!! It's about the Happiness Is Pets pet store chain selling sick and dying puppy mill puppies. In this particular case, a number of their puppies died from Distemper. The HSUS helped tremendously in one aspect - they got this story to go national. I do agree with you in one respect - donate to the smaller rescue groups or shelters. The HSUS does not need your …   more ›
