The Village launched a new program this spring offering free fare from local businesses through their Facebook page. Have you participated?
Hey, Lisle business regulars: have you noticed an uptick in bodies milling through? In April the Village started offering free products and services from Lisle businesses through the Village of Lisle Facebook page. Each week a business owner offers a limited number of their featured deal to the Village's Facebook fans. (Customers who come in after the initial offer has been snapped up still receive a comparable deal or discount.) While the offers are open to both new and old customers, village staff said they hope the deals encourage repeat business. Free hotel staycations (from both Hilton and Wyndham) were redeemed in a hurry, but Economic Development Director Catherine Schuster said the most popular deal was a free bunch of tulips from …

The Village is testing out its expanded social media reach with a new marketing promotion.
You can friend or follow just about anything on social media—your real friends and family, celebrities, organizations, upcoming movies, even food products. But are you keeping up with local government and business online? Several local businesses already spread their gospel (not to mention deals and events) through Facebook and Twitter. The Lisle Convention and Visitors Bureau oversees the Lisle, Ill. Facebook page. Heck, even Lisle Patch promotes new content and shares community messages through our Facebook and Twitter pages. While the Village operates a Twitter account to promote its seasonal French Market vendors, it is only recently that staff expanded their social media reach. The Village now officially conducts three Twitter …

Candidates discussed the role of Choose DuPage and economic development, their opinions on compensation, and where they would make government more efficient.
What is the key to luring more jobs to DuPage County? It was one of the questions Republicans seeking a position on DuPage County Board District 5 fielded at Lisle Village Hall Wednesday evening. All seven Republican candidates were in attendance: Richard Furstenau, Patricia Gustin, James Healy, Tonia Khouri, Paul Santucci, John Zediker, and Ed Young. The Republican candidate forum was sponsored by the Lisle Area Chamber of Commerce. Lisle Chamber President and CEO Tom Althoff said Democratic candidate Tony Michelassi was not invited to the forum because he is running uncontested in the primary. District 5 includes portions of Aurora, Lisle, Naperville, and Warrenville. The primary is March 20. Candidates also discussed economic devopment…

Candidates recapped their views on spending and the role of government, but delved into ways DuPage can draw new business and new jobs.
Republicans vying to serve DuPage County Board’s District 2 met in Lisle Wednesday evening to field audience questions on how they define government’s role, and their ideas on attracting business to the area. Five of the candidates were present, including Michael Loftus of Lisle, Zachary Wilson of Lombard, Elaine Zannis of Oak Brook, and Pete DiCianni and Rafael Rivadeneira of Elmhurst. Jim Long of Downers Grove, and Charles Mueller and Sean Noonan of Elmhurst were not in attendance. Early voting is underway for the primary election on March 20. District 2 affects the north and east portions of the village. The Lisle Area Chamber of Commerce sponsored the event. Candidates echoed their sentiments from a February forum at Elmhurst College …

Officials take hard look at how to attract new business after gauging the effectiveness of their restaurant grants.
Previous coverage: Economic Development Commission Looking to Revamp Restaurant Grants In an effort to continue downtown redevelopment, Lisle officials are reexamining grant offerings to attract new businesses. Catherine Schuster, Lisle’s economic development director said the village board of trustees directed her department to “retool their grant programs” and come out with a new mix of grant offerings. While no grants are off the table, Schuster said some grant programs, such as the restaurant grants, are no longer a high priority. Although the village was able to use a $20,000 restaurant grant to lure John Dough Bakery to reopen (albeit under a new name), Schuster said the grant has not been “as effective as we want it to be." In a …

MicroSun Technology's departure to Woodridge this spring will coincide with the arrival of the corporate headquarters of Knoxville's SunCoke.
This spring the village will welcome a new corporation, SunCoke Energy, to its business community while watching another, MicroSun Technology, leave town. That's according to Catherine Schuster, director of Lisle’s Economic Development Department, who is not shocked. “That’s sort of the way of the world,” she said. “Businesses come; they close; they transfer.” According to vice president of business development Thomas Golab, MicroSun designs and builds “highly sophisticated” rechargeable batteries for medical and military devices, and is expected to be out of their 1925 Ohio St. offices located in the College West Business Park by April. That’s when the Lisle Park District, who purchased the building for $3.15 million last November, …

With a redeveloped downtown and two corporate additions, Lisle's government, retailers and realtors seem positive about the near future.
A Lisle resident driving down Main Street can see significant changes to the village's business from just a few years ago. Lisle's revamped downtown and its successful wooing of the Navistar and SunCoke corporations to its office corridor have several voices in the community optimistic about the village's business atmosphere in a still-struggling general economy. According to Lisle’s Economic Development Department website, there are 46 retail spaces currently unoccupied around the village. Of those, 10 are listed in the downtown business district that underwent major redevelopments in 2008 and 2009, according to economic development director Catherine Schuster. Schuster said her department's listings are updated quarterly. The most …

Here are some items from the village board meetings of Sept. 13 and 27.
The Village Board of Trustees reviewed a customer complaint and several zoning changes at it Monday, Sept. 27 meeting. A resident of Winchester Avenue disputed a $1,200 water bill after the Public Works Department found a "discrepancy between the inside and outside water meters." Finance director Kim Schiller said employees inspected the house on Winchester when a family moved to the home in 2005. Village employees reset the meters. During a check in February of this year, employees discovered a discrepancy and the residents were charged for unpaid usage. The household continues to dispute the charges and the matter will be addressed at the Oct. 4 meeting. Representatives of the Banner Apartments at 3060 and 3080 Ogden Ave. brought a …
