Report: Sandack in the Running for Next Illinois GOP Chairman?

The Downers Grove Republican has significant support as the replacement for Pat Brady, according to a Chicago Sun-Times politics post.

Illinois state Rep. Ron Sandack (R-Downers Grove) is a top-tier candidate to become the next Illinois GOP Chairman and replace Pat Brady, who resigned last week, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. The Sun-Times lists Sandack as one of nine finalists considered by the Republican State Central Committee; of the nine, Sandack won the paper's informal reader poll with almost 44 percent of the vote. Sandack would likely be a controversial choice given that many believe Oberweis and other socially conservative Republicans ousted Brady over the former chairman's support of gay marriage—which Sandack also supports—the paper said. Major Illinois Republican player Ron Gidwitz is quoted in the article as being highly critical of anyone who pushed out …

Your Take: Local Police—What Do You Appreciate?

It's Police Week in the United States; in that spirit, we asked our local readers in DuPage County what they appreciate most about their local force.

Did you know that this week—May 13-20—is officially Police Week in the United States? According to PoliceWeek.org:  In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, DC to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice. In the spirit of the week, we reached out to our DuPage County readers on Facebook and asked what they appreciate most about their local police departments. Here’s some of what readers shared with us:  Carol Gog: “Back in the nineties, I locked my keys in …

Photo Gallery: DuPage County Underwater in Spring Flood

How crazy is it out there right now? Please show us! Upload your pictures of flooding from DuPage County towns here.

Note: when uploading photos/video, please include a caption with the town and street where they were taken. Thank you! By 7 a.m. Thursday, the National Weather Service in Romeoville had the total rainfall amount at 3.24 inches for the previous 24 hours. Then it rained some more. And it's not forecast to stop until Friday morning.  What does the scene look like for you? Are there several feet of water outside your home (or, heaven forbid, inside it)? Stranded cars; flooded lawns and streets? If you’re lucky enough not to be too busy dealing with any emergencies right now (and we hope you are), we’d love to see what you see, and our readership likely would as well.  If you have any great snapshots/photographs of the flooding around DuPage …

Jeff Ward: How to Scare Your Boyfriend Without Using a Shotgun

I may be a gender traitor, but I don't want to get shot, either!

Every now and then, the magnitude of an event in one of our 22 happy Friday Patch suburbs makes me sit up and take notice. And let me tell you, when the fine folks in Downers Grove set out to pique my interest, they go all in. Let’s just say, were I an inhabitant of that fine municipality and my wife, girlfriend, or maybe even my sister, asked me to do the dishes, people would say they’d never seen an old guy move that fast. I’d be practicing my best “yes dears” 24/7. Vickie D. Podruzek, 43, currently faces charges of aggravated domestic battery and aggravated battery with a firearm and may ultimately be charged with attempted murder. DuPage County Judge Elizabeth Sexton set her bail at $1 million. If she does manage to post bond, Podruzek…

DuPage County Board Republican Primary Candidates Distinguish Themselves at LWV Forum

Primary election will be March 20; early voting starts Feb. 27.

Republicans vying for a seat in DuPage County Board District 2 had a chance last weekend to set themselves apart from one another in the crowded Primary race. At the Elmhurst League of Women Voters candidate forum at Elmhurst College Sunday, the audience heard from Michael Loftus of Lisle, Elaine Zannis of Oak Brook, Zachary Wilson of Lombard, and Pete DiCianni, Charles Mueller, Sean Noonan and Rafael Rivadeneira, all of Elmhurst. Candidate Jim Long of Downers Grove did not attend. They answered questions posed by the League on transportation, affordable housing and attracting green businesses in DuPage County. But it was the audience questions, like "Will you sign up for a pension from DuPage County if elected?," that perhaps most …

At the Lisle Republican Candidate Forum and as his direct response to term limits, Dicianni tells us that he is not interested in lifelong politics because he has a business to run. He said " that’s what I do full time for a living" In this article because it was a convenient answer to the question, he tells the LWV that his sisters run his business. Which is it? Puppies Sold at Naperville, Downers Grove Pet Shops Diagnosed with Canine Distemper

The Humane Society of the United States said anyone who recently purchased a puppy that appears ill should check for distemper.

The Humane Society of the United States said it confirmed that two puppies recently purchased from a pet store with locations in Naperville and Downers Grove were diagnosed with distemper. One of the puppies died. Happiness is Pets sold the puppies in December and early January, according to a news release from the Humane Society. “Canine distemper is potentially deadly and is highly contagious to other dogs,” HSUS Illinois State Director Kristen Strawbridge said in a news release. “We need to get the word out to the pet-loving public who may be inadvertently exposing their pets to this virus by coming in contact with one of these puppies at a dog park or handling or buying a puppy from the Happiness is Pets Naperville or Downers Grove …

This article is NOT about the HSUS!! It's about the Happiness Is Pets pet store chain selling sick and dying puppy mill puppies. In this particular case, a number of their puppies died from Distemper. The HSUS helped tremendously in one aspect - they got this story to go national. I do agree with you in one respect - donate to the smaller rescue groups or shelters. The HSUS does not need your …   more ›
