I will call the police every time I see a child over there. We'll see how well the police protect…   more ›

District 203 Continues to Discuss 2013-14 Calendar

Board members failed to reach a consensus on whether or not to approve a 2013-14 draft calendar at last night's meeting.

Naperville School District 203 students, staff and parents will have to wait at least another month before they find out what the school calendar for 2013-14 will look like as board members continue to mull it over.  Board members failed to reach a consensus on approving the 2013-14 calendar after a 3-3 vote took place at last night’s meeting, with board member Dave Weeks abstaining.  Structuring a balanced calendar in terms of how many school days each semester has is one of the major concerns for some administrators. The current proposed calendar shows a second semester having ten additional school days, or two extra weeks, compared to the first semester.  “Two weeks is just too much for me,” said board vice president Jackie Romberg. …

District 203 Board Considers Boundary Recommendation, All Day Kindergarten

While parents ask District 203 to hold off on implementing recommended changes to school boundaries, the district is also considering all day kindergarten, which is tied to the recommended map.

Without establishing an all day kindergarten program at District 203 and with the upcoming implementation of state common core standards, the school day for kindergarten teachers and students would be insane, according to one of the district’s teachers. As the district has been exploring adjusting enrollment boundaries and relocating students to different schools, it is also discussing the implementation of an all day kindergarten. During the District 203 Board of Education meeting Tuesday night held in the auditorium at Naperville Central High School, the board heard a presentation outlining the benefits of an all-day kindergarten program. Judge to Determine Relevance of Student Records in Naperville North Sexual Abuse Case

The former high school counselor is accused of sexually abusing a student.

The judge overseeing John Carbonaro's sex abuse case is looking over school district records to determine whether the documents are relevant to the case, as Carbonaro's defense has suggested. Carbonaro was charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse last year following allegations that he had a relationship with a student. Carbonaro's attorney subpoenaed records for two District 203 students, one of whom is said by prosecutors to have been sexually abused by the former Naperville North High School counselor. Prosecutors previously objected to the records being released on privacy grounds. The case returns to court on March 9, by which time Judge Blanche Fawell has said attorneys on both sides should file any pretrial motions.
