While the regional demographics of membership spread across Chicagoland, the most members hail from the Arboretum's backyard.
The Morton Arboretum hosts around 830,000 visitors each year, and only 4 percent are year-round members. They reap the benefits of unlimited free admission, discounts on classes and events, and similar discounts at other arboreta (check out the full list of membership options and advantages under images). So who exactly makes up that 4 percent? As of 2007, the last year data was available, the 1,700-acre grounds attracted nature lovers for repeat visits from St. Charles to Plainfield to Des Plaines. But there's a definite connection between locality and membership rates. Downers Grove, Glen Ellyn, Naperville and Wheaton residents averaged 2,000-4,000 memberships, twice as many as other locals. Just because the trees are bare doesn't mean activities are. Today kicks off a slew of Christmas and winter-themed events.
While the final leaves drop—along with the temperature—the Morton Arboretum is gearing up for an active winter season. Boasted as the fourth most visited garden in the entire nation, the "tree zoo" rakes in over 800,000 visitors each year. (Public relations manager Gina Tedesco said 40,000 people came to watch the leaves change in October alone.) Karin Jaros, assistant director of membership, said some people don't realize there are winter events and classes. "Many people are looking for something for their kids," she said.
