Ever heard of a yarn bombing? Unknown vandals--armed with yarn--adorned the front of the store, as well as fences and fountain decorations nearby sometime Friday night.
The Nook owner Kitty Murphy introduced her ravamped store to the public this spring, so it's fitting that some individual or individuals initiated the store into its first International Yarn Bombing Day by secretly decorating the storefront. They placed pieces of crochet "graffiti," including flowers, garlands, leaves--even capes and headbands for the animals in the nearby fountain. It's not the first time bits of crochet have popped up in the village. In 2011 fiber artist Carol Hummel fixed tiny yarn bombs around the Morton Arboretum's grounds. The pieces matched the tree she decorated in crochet for the Arboretum's "Nature Unframed" exhibit. Check out the full album on Lisle Patch's Facebook. Don’t miss any downtown updates—subscribe…

See Carol's finished work in person at the Morton Arboretum this spring; in the meantime, attend her monthly crochet workshops for your chance to contribute to her artwork.
Ohio-based artist Carol Hummel believes you should “take your dysfunction and turn it into art,” so her creations spring from her personal ideas and experiences. But she wants others to interpret what they mean. “It’s not my story that’s significant. My art becomes significant because it connects to someone through their filter,” she explained. Her most recent endeavors include the fiber arts (read: crochet). Her earlier works explored the unraveling of afghans into new objects—a new beginning, emerging from something old. At an art museum in Cleveland Hummel created a yarn ceiling over the entryway. She sees yarn as a material that can provide both comfort, like warmth, and confinement. But here’s the secret: Hummel didn’t know how to …

from the Morton Arboretum If gorgeous landscapes could sculpt, weave, or paint, imagine what beauty they’d create. A brand new art exhibition will reveal how trees at The Morton Arboretum inspired artists to develop a diverse and surprising set of creations. Nature Unframed: Art at the Arboretum will open on May 19, 2011 as eleven striking and sometimes towering works of art. Renowned artists from around the world designed their pieces specifically based on how they “read” the unique landscape “galleries” where the works will be displayed. The art will complement stunning beauty at the Arboretum, which features the largest collection of flowering, ornamental trees in the Midwest. “The works will also highlight trees’ beauty, vulnerability…

Today the Arboretum issued details about upcoming monthly crochet workshops with Hummel, prior to the installation, which give locals the opportunity to contribute their own needlework to the exhibit. Those with basic crochet skills are encouraged to attend sessions on Jan. 9, Feb. 27 and March 27 from noon - 2 p.m. in the Visitor's Center. Fees are $10 for non-members and $8 for members. Why are you mentioning a pair of knitting needles in an article about crochet? It's frustrating that people continually confuse knitting and crochet. Knitting uses 2 needles, crocheting uses 1 hook. Knitting needles are pointed, crochet hooks are hooked at the end.   more ›
