Benedictine Best Buddies Basketball Extraveganza

The school's chapter of the international group hosted its first basketball game last week, and hopes to make it an annual event.

 Benedictine University's Best Buddies chapter hosted their first ever basketball scrimmage in the Rice Center Arena of BenU this past weekend. This non-profit, international organization brings college students and individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities together through various activities that provide opportunities for the Buddies and college buddies to bond with each other. The Benedictine Best Buddies chapter split its members into two teams—green and yellow—and competed against one another in two eight-minute and two 12-minute quarters. College Students Bond with Their Best Buddies

Involvement in Benedictine University's Best Buddies chapter has skyrocketed during the group's 10th anniversary year. A special basketball scrimmage game Friday will raise money for the group.

Students at Benedictine University have lots of buddies—lots of best buddies. And with buddies come hugs, lots and lots of hugs. Best Buddies is an international non-profit organization that fosters one-on-one friendships between college students and individuals with intellectual developmental disabilities, or IDD. Through these friendships, persons with IDD get help to develop leadership skills and find jobs. Benedictine students have supported a chapter on campus for 10 years, and just in the past year the number of students involved has skyrocketed to about 175 from the usual participation of 30-40 students.
