After posting her personal best at the Boston Marathon, Benet Academy alumna Colleen Huml of Wheaton heard news of explosions upon her return from the race.
Benet Academy alumna and Wheaton native Colleen Huml's excitement after finishing the Boston Marathon with a personal best time was quickly replaced with horror when she learned two explosions had gone off at the finish line. Huml finished the marathon with a personal best time of 3:14, two minutes before her sister, Catherine Huml, and 16 minutes before her mom, Marianne Huml. "We were super excited to be running together and to have qualified, because it's tough to do," Huml said while waiting for an evening flight out of Boston late Monday afternoon. "... We ran unusually fast, so we were done earlier, (and) we were super excited with our times." Upon returning to their hotel about two blocks from the finish area, Huml and her family …

Benet Academy 28, Oswego 13. Porter Ontko rushed for over 200 yards and scored three touchdowns as the Redwings overcame a terrible first half.
Breaking It Down: The biggest challenge for Benet in its second-round matchup early on was holding onto the football. The Redwings committed four turnovers in the first half and nearly committed two or three more. Both teams combined for eight turnovers in the contest. Running back Porter Ontko put the Redwings in front early after a 65-yard run, but quarterback Jack Beneventi committed the first of three fumbles after the Redwings got away with a double turnover situation earlier in the possession. The Panthers took advantage and quarterback Brett Wainwright connected with Jack Kwiatkowski to tie the game at 7. Panthers back Mickeel Stewart scored on a 14-yard carry in the second to give the Panthers a 13-7 halftime lead. The Redwings …

Benet 24, Andrew 10. A strong defensive effort and clutch passes by Redwings QB Jack Beneventi were crucial in first-round victory in the Class 7A playoffs.
Breaking It Down: What a difference a year makes. In 2011, Benet finished a dismal 1-8. In 2012, it finished the regular season 8-1 and have won their first playoff game. Benet’s defense was a major reason why. It held Andrew to a 25-yard field goal early in the first after Jack Beneventi was picked off on a pass that caromed off a player’s foot before T-Bolts defensive back Kevin Walsh got the interception. Beneventi shook off the fluke and scored on the next possession with a 15-yard reception to Nick McTarnaghan. After the defense halted a fourth-and-1 for Andrew early in the second quarter, the Redwings scored on a 3-yard run by back Jack Crain to give them a 14-3 lead. On the final play of the first half, Beneventi was hit from …

Several Redwings came close to qualifying for Saturday's final round with some fast swims and best-time performances.
Benet was the heartbreak team of the girls swimming state meet Friday night at Evanston. The Redwings did not have anyone qualify for Saturday's final round, though they came close in several events, racking up two 13th place finishes, two 14th place showings and one 15th place ranking. Only the top 12 finishers in each event advance to the second day—the top six make the championship heat and the next six qualify for the consolation final. "It was disappointing because we didn't get anybody back, but we had some fast swims and best times so you can't really complain," Benet coach Sarah Maggio said. "It's just you come to the state meet and it's a big show. You have to come ready and give it everything you've got. Unfortunately it didn't …

Tigers' offense and defense overpowers Redwings, 49-7, in Class 7A first-round playoff action.
The Wheaton Warrenville South title defense is off to a flying start. In an IHSA Class 7A first-round playoff football game on Friday night in Wheaton, the host Tigers were as inhospitable as ever to their last victim: Benet. WW South scored on all five of its first-half possessions, and lineman William Davis added a fumble return to initiate a running clock for the final two quarters in the Tigers' 49-7 victory over the Redwings. Wheaton Warrenville South (10-0) captured its 22nd consecutive victory; the top seed and defending state champion earned a crosstown rematch with conference rival Wheaton North, which denied Marian Catholic 27-6. Benet closed its season at 5-5. The Tigers were unrelenting on the offensive end and resilient on …

Benet dispatches Downers Grove South after Lockport struggles past Naperville North in Thursday's semifinal matches at DGS.
Lockport and Benet won in very different fashions in their Class 4A regional volleyball semifinal matches Thursday at Downers Grove South. But their separate paths led to the same place: Saturday's regional championship match. Lockport (22-14) won Thursday's opening semifinal match against Naperville North 23-25, 25-20, 25-14 in an error-filled battle. Naperville North (20-16), backed by a raucous crowd, took the first game thanks largely to the play of senior Emily Koch. The Huskies also took advantage of several unforced errors by the Porters. The second game was back-and-forth most of the way, with neither side able to gain momentum because of defensive errors. With Lockport leading 21-20, senior Alexis Davito stopped the Huskies with …

Redwings' offensive lineman made an official visit to Berkeley this weekend as recruiting heats up.
Before Benet Academy offensive tackle Pat Flavin became a target of college recruiters, he followed the process intently. With all of the sites and message boards dedicated to college recruiting, especially in football and basketball, it's become an industry all in itself. Now, however, Flavin is smack in the middle of it personally. He left this weekend for Berkeley to take his first official visit to California. He was on hand for the Bears' game against Arizona State Saturday. "I was big on recruiting before it started happening to me," Flavin said. "It's awesome, every second of it. When it gets hectic, I just remind myself that this is what I wanted and this is a lot of fun. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity." The 6-foot-7, 260-…
Redwings pick up 1-0 regional title win over Naperville Central to set up sectional date with Naperville North.
Coming into Saturday's Class 3A Naperville Central Regional title game, Benet boys soccer coach Sean Wesley had a pretty good idea of what his team would need to garner a win over the host Redhawks. He hoped for an early goal, success defending Central on set plays and holding on for dear life. Wesley received almost that exact recipe in Benet's 1-0 regional title win. The Redwings withstood three Central corner kicks in the first three minutes of the match, got a goal from junior Thomas Mojica with 31:29 left in the first half and held off the Redhawks to avenge an early 1-0 loss on the same field to Central. "There was no genius in what we were doing," Wesley said. "It was more the kids believing in what we were doing. They knew where to…
