Journalist Draws Protest at Benedictine

A lecture by the Jerusalem Post's chief political correspondent about the differences in journalism in the U.S. and Middle East was met by a silent protest.

More than 100 Benedictine University students silently protested a lecture the Jerusalem Post's chief political correspondent gave on campus earlier this week.  Gil Hoffman spoke for about an hour Nov. 15 discussing the differences between being a reporter in the United States and in Israel, and the peace processes in the Middle East. Students protested because the program had no Palestinian representation. The protest started with a prayer in the Founder's Woods clubhouse on campus. From there, the large group continued to the lecture hall in the Krasa building. They stood up once during Hoffman's speech and left a few minutes later. Benedictine's Sister Campus Will Offer Masters of Public Health

On Oct. 5 a proposal was approved for Benedictine University's Springfield campus to offer the degree.

from Benedictine University The Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) approved October 5 a proposal by Benedictine University to offer the Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) program at its Springfield branch campus. "This is a natural program for Springfield because the two major employers in the area are health care and government," said Michael Bromberg, dean of Academic Affairs at Benedictine University at Springfield. "The M.P.H. program makes perfect sense for the Springfield workforce. We anticipate the first learning team will start in the spring of 2011."  The M.P.H. program combines the foundation disciplines of public health with a high degree of responsiveness to local needs and changing circumstances. Benedictine Awards Alumni Service Efforts

The university commends alumni who have made extraordinary contributions to the community.

From Benedictine University Benedictine University recognized the winners of the 2010 Alumni Awards during Homecoming festivities on Oct. 2. The Distinguished Alumni Award, which recognizes outstanding achievement in a career field or personal endeavor, was presented to Harold G. Bicek, M.D. Bicek earned his high school diploma from St. Procopius Academy in 1949, and attended St. Procopius College before leaving in 1952 to attend Stritch School of Medicine. Bicek earned a medical degree in 1956 and interned at Cook County Hospital. Bicek joined the U.S. Army Medical Corps in 1957 and was honorably discharged two years later. He opened a family practice in Downers Grove in 1959, and remained in private practice until 1987 when he left to …
