Artist Charley Krebs shows off his Patch work at Riverside Public Library.
For cartoonist Charley Krebs, drawing his thoughts has always been a form of shorthand journalism. "A good image will draw you in," Krebs said of his work. "It makes an editorial comment and can start a good discussion." Krebs has been drawing the news since 1979, first at his college newspaper and most recently here at Patch. Readers can see his Sunday Cartoon weekly on their local Patch site where Krebs offers his unique vision of the world and his opinion on events that matter to readers. from the Morton Arboretum If gorgeous landscapes could sculpt, weave, or paint, imagine what beauty they’d create. A brand new art exhibition will reveal how trees at The Morton Arboretum inspired artists to develop a diverse and surprising set of creations. Nature Unframed: Art at the Arboretum will open on May 19, 2011 as eleven striking and sometimes towering works of art. Renowned artists from around the world designed their pieces specifically based on how they “read” the unique landscape “galleries” where the works will be displayed. The art will complement stunning beauty at the Arboretum, which features the largest collection of flowering, ornamental trees in the Midwest. “The works will also highlight trees’ beauty, vulnerability…

from Lisle Community School District 202 At the recent Illinois Art Education Association annual conference held at the Lisle Hilton, Lauren Etzkorn, a Schiesher School student, was one of only forty young artists across the state to have their artwork selected for recognition as an Outstanding Youth Artist. In her selected piece, she created a Chinese scroll using black ink for the bamboo forest and the panda. She also added a red ink Chinese colophon seal and wrote her name in gold Chinese characters, then as a final touch added real bamboo for the ends of her scroll. Her teacher, Nancy Staszak, explained that the colors Lauren chose had significance. "Red is a traditional color in Chinese art. Artist seals are almost always red and …

Eighth grade students at Lisle Junior High master new forms of mixed media in art class.
From Lisle Community School District 202 Eighth grade art students at Lisle Junior High found a new use for old books with student teacher Susie Xiong, a senior in Art Education from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. The stuents created altered books, a form of mixed media. Following a presentation on a variety of altered book examples and methods, students chose an old book based on its size, shape or content. Using techniques such as painting pages, adding or deleting text in the book, collage, and cutting out windows through pages, students modified their books into unique works of art. The use of mixed media, or a variety of materials, was required. Concepts and themes of the altered books ranged from a beach scene to a …
