Remembering Rachel Fourteen Years Later

Missing Bolingbrook teen Rachel Mellon would have been 28 years old yesterday.

On Jan. 31, 1996, I was cradling my newborn daughter as news of missing Bolingbrook teen, Rachel Mellon Skemp, was reported. The story gnawed at me as as a mother and a woman.  Suspicion surrounds this case, as there remains to this day a discrepancy in the lack of details as to how or when Rachel became missing. Rachel has stayed home from school sick that day; her mom went to work and her brother to school. Rachel's stepfather was also home but reported to the police that he had left at some point to walk the family dog. It wasn't until Rachel's mom returned home from work that it was realized that Rachel, her pillow and blanket from her bed were missing. Recalling the details of that night, Rachel's best friend posted, "Later that night…

Case Still Open in Attempt to Abduct Student

Lisle police continue to investigate an attempt to lure a 10-year-old girl into a van near the junior high school.

Lisle Police are still investigating the attempted abduction of a Schiesher School student earlier this month. According to department officials, a 10-year-old female student was walking near Lisle Junior High on Sept. 9 when a man in a black minivan approached her. The man allegedly offered the student a ride to school, and continued to follow her as she kept walking. The student reportedly hid behind some cars in the junior high's parking lot before proceeding to class. Sgt. Randy Johnson, public information officer for the Lisle Police Department, said the student did not report the incident until she came home from school that afternoon.
