Making a List of Target Companies for a Job Search

When beginning a job search where does one start? Start with two lists. A list of friends, neighbors and contacts. A list of target companies where you could work.

Lets begin with some interesting stats*:

  • According to the Wall Street Journal, 90% of jobs are filled through networking on one sort or another.
  • Historically, men have become more likely to learn about opportunities through networking than women.
  • 26.7% of external hires made by organizations came from referrals, making it the number one external source of hiring.
  • 90% of recruiting firms do a Google search on candidates.
  • 85% of hiring managers use social networking sites like LinkedIn to look for potential candidates who’ve been referred by other professionals.

I help job seekers find jobs through networking; by employing two different lists. A contact list and a target company list are both necessary in conducting a job search focused on the 80% of the jobs that are not advertised.

First, assemble a contact list of all the people you know. We’ll discuss this list in another blog posting. The second list that you’ll use is a list of target companies. This list involves a little imagination and research. If one of the people on your contact list is a librarian you’re a winner; if not, you’re about to add a new name to your contact list, because the library is a great place to get company names for your target company list.

Let’s say you are interested in a career in “high performance, high efficiency, home energy.” Ask your librarian how you find the companies in that market segment that are 25, 50 and 100 miles from your zip code. Maybe you are a truck driver want to know who are the 5 best trucking companies in your area to work for. Maybe you’re interested in a bigger paycheck, what are the best paying companies in your industry? Your librarian has that information right there, ready for you to use.

Of course you can use the Internet if you were traumatized when you were a child when you paid an overdue fee to a librarian. But, then you’ll have one less name on your contact list. Most librarians are nice, even if they insist on your speaking in a whisper.

Another way to find companies to put on your target company list is to do a keyword search with any of the job boards, like Monster or CareerBuilder. See what company names come up and then add any onto your list. Whenever anyone tells you about a job, put the company name on your list, even if you already have a contact at that company. You never know who can help and as someone wise once said, “Many hands make for light work.” What companies are in the news? If you like the company or are interested, put their name on the list.

You could have 25 to 50 names on your list of target companies, and that’s okay. You can have a lot more companies on your list. However, when you print out your list to show people, keep the printout to between 10 to 15 company names so that the reader isn’t overwhelmed. Then ask them if they have any contacts at any of these companies. If they don’t have any contacts at companies on your list, ask them if there are any companies that they could suggest for you to include on your list. This way your list is never stagnant but always growing and changing.

Good Hunting!

I personally support all area businesses and have just recently become a member of the Lisle areaRead More Chamber of Commerce. Just because you stop people from purchasing a puppy from a particular business owner does not mean you have saved that puppy. By your own "facts" she is selling the puppies over the internet. i would think that it would be better to have people take these dogs from the supposed "horrific" conditions and give them good homes. You all jump to conclusions about what I am, what I believe, what practices i support and even the state of health of my dogs. I cringe at the apparent joy you get in your thoughts of pushing a legitimate business owner into bankruptcy. I am humane enough to say that I hope none of you ever fall on hard times or find yourself in a situation that threatens your livelihood. You see yourselves as the Judge and jury, you and your groups have already decided based on your opinions that you will use your efforts to shut down this business. It doesn't matter that none of the investigators ever found the store to be in violation of any laws because you all clearly have a personal issue with the owner of this business and want to prove that even the DOA is wrong because it did not find any violations. When I entered this discussion this morning I was really interested in finding out whether there was any legitimacy to these protests because from what I could see there was no basis for singling out this store. I don't see protests at any other pet stores, or even other places such as kennels where dogs are kept in terrible conditions. BTW, another conclusion made was wrong, I have been a supporting member, contributor and fundraiser for the West Suburban Food Bank. I do my part. I still feel that your protest is useless and adding to the already reduced patronage in the downtown Lisle area.

A legitimate business owner?! Seriously?! There are none so blind as those who will not see.Read More Tammy Coglianese lies about where her puppies come from. She abuses those dogs and puppies. She supports cruelty and abuse in the puppy mills she patronizes. If she CHOOSES to make a living off of the blood and backs of abused animals, off of lies, fraud and deception - then she also chooses the consequences of her actions. Period. End of story. You can play the martyr and victim all you want Roseanne. You can ignore the facts, and stick your head in the sand. Doesn't make your beliefs truths. Truth is truth, facts are facts, and lies are lies. Puppy (Mill) Parlor is not what I call a "legitimate business." But then again, I guess that's because I have a conscience. And a moral compass. And I don't live in Roseanneland. Btw, what exactly do you do for the West Suburban Food Bank, Roseanne??

Patch posts mugshots as part of reporting on police actions. We can never be paid to removeRead More mugshots, and thus are not an "extortion website." We can always update articles and report on future developments in the adjudication process.

kindly directed at the editor~ Sorry Mr. Editor, you will get no Mia culpeas from me. I findRead More your practice of posting large head shots on this site appalling and yes it's definitely a form of cyber-bulling and possibly putting innocent people's identity at risk. Other neighboring suburbs post the local police reports without the need of a picture. Many local area Patch.com sites post the names , their offense and where he/she was apprehended. That is sufficient. But as I observed under the previous editor, not only did the Lisle Patch allow one to read the names, offenses and location as provided by the Lisle Police. The Patch website also included pictures, ages and addresses of those cited. Thats when the Patch crossed the line. I'm sure you're aware of internet catfishing. You know where one's picture can be lifted and reposted elsewhere without their knowledge or consent. While I am thankful that you do not ask for monies to remove headshots , how can you guarantee the citizens of Lisle will not become victims of these other parasite websites? Yes, these folks may have used poor judgement . But sometimes nice people do stupid things. Hopefully it's a one-time incident. As much as I believe in the First Amendment , I believe a responsible editor balances FOIA with a person right to privacy. Who wants their children , neighbors , minister or potential employer finding one's headshot on a website like this. Especially should the case be thrown out and/or the person is found innocent. If Springfield legislates this correctly I would hope that you could not post pictures and other identifying information unless the person is found guilty.

Yet, the State of Illinois proposed its own "Tollway Website of Shame"?! Those that votedRead More against the tollway website of shame cited that people could get named on the site even if someone else was running up fines with their car. And Illinois website would also be an "extortion-style" site where people have to pay to get their name removed from the website. http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20130604/news/706049727/
