Lions' Volleyball Overcomes a Slow Start to Triumph Over Sandwich

Lions surmount early miscues to dispatch the Indians 2-0.

The Lions didn’t come out roaring, but they still had enough intensity to improve to 14-3 after a 2-0 win over conference foe Sandwich.

“We started out a little rough and didn’t take care of the ball,” said Lions coach Matt Hrubesky.  “We left a lot of balls on the net.  I thought when we cleaned it up, we played pretty well.”

The shaky Lions’ start kept the Indians in the game.  The teams traded early scores with neither team able to pull ahead.  The Lions were trailing in the first game, 10-9, when Kristen Holub stepped up to serve.  Eleven Holub serves later and the Lions had taken a commanding 20-10 lead that took the life out of the Indians.

“Kristen came in and served to a tough area and made them make plays,” said Hrubesky. “She gave us some great energy.  I thought once we cleaned it up a bit we played pretty well.”

On the first game, senior Anita Urban said, “We played down a bit.  It wasn’t our best game.  We got better throughout the game but we should have done better.”

The Lions picked up where they left off in the second game.  Summer Stitt stepped up big with four kills.

“Summer pounded the ball down the left side,” said Coach Hrubesky, “and Darian (Payne) was a monster in the middle.  She controlled the net like she always does.”

The Lions, now 4-0 in conference, next travel to Seneca for an early season conference showdown.  With the Lions playing with a lot of confidence, the future looks bright.

“We’re looking to go undefeated,” said Hrubesky, when asked about Lisle’s chances in the Interstate Eight.  “We’re not looking to lose any conference games.”
