Lions Fall to Quincy-Notre Dame in State Championship Battle

Lisle soccer is second in state for the 2011 season after an impressive 20-6 season.

For the senior soccer players, hopes were high that at the end of the night they would be talking about their second state title.  It was not to be, though, as the Quincy Notre Dame Raiders scored two second half goals to take their first state championship, 2-0.

“This is probably the best team we have played the last two years,” said Coach Kevin Perez about the Raiders.  “I tip my hat to them for winning the championship.”

Both teams had scoring opportunities in the first half.  The Raiders came out strong and spent the first twenty minutes on the Lion side of the field.  The Lion defense held, though, and about mid-half turned the tables on the Raiders and had some scoring opportunities of their own.

Eric Osika had some good looking shots for the Lions, but the Raider defense was just as stingy as the Lions this night and got just enough of the ball to push it wide or high.

The Raiders came out strong again in the second half, but the Lion defense continued to hold.  With 27:56 left in the half, though, the Raiders scored the only goal they would need.

“We had a great season,” said Coach Perez.  “This is a real good team that doesn’t give up. Just think of the games this season where we were down goals and came back to win.  I couldn’t be more proud of them, and what they accomplished.”

Win or lose, this was to be the last Lion soccer game for the seniors.  They have accomplished a lot in their time at LSHS, bringing home both a first and second place state trophy.  Brad Blechschmidt, Pat Webb, Matt Gill, Cole Collins, Kazim Kahn, Jake Soukup, Taylor Morten and manager Karl Burba have left their mark on the team for years to come.
