VIDEO: Robot Built by Students Shows Off Skills

Her name's Lucy, she's 150 pounds and has one heck of a throwing arm. 

Created and built by robotics team students, "Lucy" is a wirelessly controlled robot that can launch Nerf-style basketballs more than 50 feet and has a camera-based vision tracking system. 

Huskie Robotics Team 3061 recenlty competed in the FIRST (First in Robotics Science and Technology) Robotics Midwest Regional at the UIC Pavillion during spring break with 50 other teams from seven states. Finishing the qualification matches with a 9-2 record, the team also won the Gracious Professionalism award for their outstanding assistance to other teams throughout the competition.

FIRST's mission is to engage and inspire students in the fields of science and technology through mentor-based programs like the Huskie Robotics team, which consists of about 25 students at Naperville North High School.

"We have been competing in it for four years now," said team mentor and Naperville North technology teacher Becky Diorio. "And this is the first year when we've actually have had really good companies helping us design, build, construct and manufacture a lot of the robot and the community coming together with the team and the students to actually compete in the competition." 

A few engineers from the team's sponsor Navistar came to help the kids build Lucy throughout the six weeks it took to put the robot together. Students spent long hours after school and even on the weekends in order to get Lucy fully-functional. 

On April 18 the team will be presenting their Gracious Professionalism award at Navistar headquarters, 1011 Warrenville Rd.
