Schiesher Fifth Graders Help Raise Money to Benefit Kenya

Fifth grade students aid nonprofit Kenya Connects with a Pennies for Pages fundraiser.

from District 202

Continuing the tradition that began last year, the fifth grade students at Schiesher School have partnered with a non-profit organization called ‘Kenya Connects.’

Last year the money raised by the fifth grade students went to Sofia Primary School in Kenya (see the Youtube video above). With this money they were able to add lighting and windows to their classroom, as well as a water tower for clean water.

Students completed a fundraiser called ‘Pennies for Pages’ in which they received donations from neighbors, friends, teachers, families, etc. for each page of a book they read.  The final total for the amount of pages read by the fifth grade came to 65,000 pages. They raised a grand total of $1,669.89 for our partner school in Kenya.

The students celebrated their contributions  by rotating in four different stations which included participating in a bartering market, learning about Kenyan music and instruments, playing mancala and listening to African literature.

The stations were followed by an all group assembly with the entire fifth grade in which Mrs. Patty Hurt gave a presentation on her trip to Africa. Students were also given the final total amount of pages and money.  The students will continue this partnership by corresponding with their pen pals in Kenya and continuing to build global connections.
