Third grade students learn to make their own paper, while fourth graders try their hand at designing public parks.

Art students at have taken on some ambitious projects at the end of the year. Nancy Staszak, Schiesher art teacher, reports that the third graders last week learned how to make paper from pulp and recycled scraps.  Cheryl Mahowald, who founded the Book and Paper Arts Guild, was their guest artist and leader.

Fourth grade classes are working on Public Sculpture Parks. The students were able to tour Chicago's Millennium Park during their Art Institute field trip.  After exploring the park, the students began the project of planning their own park. The students then submitted proposals and cost estimates before their plans were approved by the teacher.  Plans were to include park grounds including paths, pools and shrubbery.

Proposals included sculptures, three dimensional representations of their park, not to exceed 12”by 18”.

The pictures indicated the excitement and enthusiasm of the students as they worked on these unique, creative opportunities. Both of these projects were successful in expanding each student’s perceptions and experiences with art.
