Ecology Club: Ways Residents Can Go "Beyond the Hour"

The Lisle High School club hosted an Earth Hour activity Saturday evening. Students administered a poll with several suggestions for residents to continue earth-conscious efforts.

Fifteen students, four residents, and Mayor Joe Broda were in attendance for Saturday's Earth Hour event, which was sponsored by the high school's Ecology Club and the Village. Read more about the event .

Students offered a survey to attendees with the following suggestions for those interested in continuing greener efforts:

  • Stop using plastic bottles
  • Recycle aluminum cans and plastic
  • Use reusable bags when grocery shopping, not plastic bags
  • Unplug mobile chargers
  • Unplug computers and televisions over night
  • Use reusable coffee cups
  • Use energy efficient light bulbs
  • Use earth-friendly fertilizers in your garden
  • Call companies to stop them from sending junk mail
  • Take shorter showers
  • Bike around the community instead of driving
  • Turn lights off when not in a room
  • Install skylights to allow natural light inside
  • Stop using paper or Styrofoam plates, plastic silverware, and plastic cups
  • Pick up trash in the neighborhood or local park, or along major streets
  • Wash laundry with cold water when possible
  • Install rain barrels in your backyard for watering purposes
