Benet Students Take Several Prizes at Regional Math Contest

The Benet Academy Math team won the Regional Math Contest on Saturday Feb. 26 at Aurora University. All team members contributed to a balanced attack across all grade levels in both the individual events and the team events.

Individual Honors

Matt Rossi of Naperville won the Regional Championship in Algebra 1, as the Freshman Team also captured the Regional Championship. Other members of the Freshman Team included Max Helfers of Plainfield (5th), Luca Valentino of Naperville (8th), Max Houck of Naperville, Tess Moriarty of Naperville and Ryan D’Mello of Naperville.

Jack Stucky of Lisle won the Regional Championship in Geometry, and Ryan Wolfe of Naperville finished second as the Sophomore Team also captured the Regional Championship. Other members of the Sophomore Team included Leah Tzakis of Naperville (8th), Eva Baghdan of Westmont (8th), Jon Lindsay-Rivera of Oswego and Kate Zimmerman of Naperville.

Brendan Caseria of Naperville won the Regional Championship in Algebra 2, as the Junior Team also captured the Regional Championship. Other members of the Junior Team included Jacob Camp of Darien (3rd), Tom Wester of Naperville (4th), Patrick Hawley of Naperville (4th), Pat Gallagher of Naperville (4th) and Kevin Scheer of Clarendon Hills.

Tom Gannon of Downers Grove finished second in the individual Senior Precalculus competition, as the Senior Team finished second. Other members of the Senior Team included Jeff Sweeney of Downers Grove (4th), Sabrina Lichon of Naperville (7th), Robbie Stanley of Warrenville, Brian Meier of Downers Grove and Izzy Baehl of Naperville.

 

Team Honors

Regional Championships were won in several team events, including

  • The Frosh/ Soph 8-person Team
  • The Junior/Senior 8-person Team
  • The Calculator Team 
  • The Frosh/Soph 2-person Team

The team now begins preparation for the State Finals to be held on Saturday, May 5. The team has competed all year in the 55 school North Suburban Math League and the Illinois Math League to help prepare the team for those finals. Head coach, Bill Kohne, is hopeful of capturing the team’s first State Championship since 2005.
