Village Announces Annual Community Spirit Award Recipients

Lisle Mayor Joe Broda presented his annual State of the Village address during the Chamber’s General Membership Luncheon, which was held at the on Jan. 19. During the presentation, Mayor Broda announced the winners of the Community Spirit Award, which Mayor Broda initiated ten years ago to acknowledge people who made outstanding contributions to the Lisle community.

This year, Mayor Broda presented not one, but two Community Spirit Awards to individuals who dedicated time and energy to .

Mayor Broda awarded Lisle resident Barb Plichta a Community Spirit Award. After receiving in-depth training, she provides walking tours of during the summer. During each 45 minute tour, Barb reviews the history of the site, rational for building the pond, interesting fun facts about the area, sustainable features of the site and the extensive native landscaping used throughout the area. Roman Plichta accepted the award on behalf of Barb, who could not attend the presentation due to prior commitments.

In addition, the St. Joan of Arc Knights of Columbus received a Community Spirit Award for their efforts in maintaining PrairieWalk Pond’s native plantings, removing trash and serving as ambassadors to the many people who visit the site each day. Dave Cascarano, who organizes as well as participates in the Knight’s activities, accepted the award on behalf of the group.

PrairieWalk Pond is the beautiful new 4.5 acre recreational area that serves as the gateway into downtown Lisle. It was originally constructed to manage storm water and prevent downtown flooding. However, a $400,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources helped transform the site into a recreational area which includes a two acre pond, lighted walking trails, seating areas, a children’s play area and splash pad, a preserved wetland and extensive native landscaping.Mayor Broda expressed his sincere appreciation to the Community Spirit Award winners for their dedicated efforts in making Lisle a better place.
