Lisle Board to Pursue Buyouts of Floodplain Homes

About 3/4 of respondents to a recent survey of floodplain homeowners said that they would accept a buyout.

The Lisle Village Board decided on Monday to pre-apply for federal funding to purchase as many as 127 Village homes that sit in a frequently-sodden floodplain, the Chicago Tribune reports.

According to the paper, that pre-application is due by July 31, and would be followed by a full application, but after that it could take several years before any funding for buyouts actually appears; meanwhile, some homeowners still remain displaced after April flooding that officials said caused more damage in Lisle than anywhere else in the state.

"There are a ton a decisions to be made between now and two-and-a-half years from now, when buy-outs or elevation could happen," the paper quoted trustee Brad Hettich saying. "I had no idea it would be this complicated."

Mayor Broda said that of 54 surveys returned by homeowners in the floodplain, 36 said they would take a buyout, while seven wanted funds to elevate their homes, eight who were uncertain and three who liked neither option, the paper said.
