Former Lisle Trustee Joe Schmitt Dies

Schmitt resigned from the Village Board due to health issues last month after nine years as trustee.

Former Lisle Trustee Joe Schmitt died Friday, after resigning from nine years of service on the Village Board early last month due to health issues which began in August.

A 31-year resident of Lisle and 22-year veteran of the Air Force, Schmitt was first appointed to the Village Board in 2003, elected in 2005 and reelected in 2009.

A village news release about Schmitt's death pointed to his dedicated service to his community and lasting impact on projects including the downtown redevelopment and creation of the Ogden Corridor Master Plan.

"He cared deeply for this community and his imprint will remain for years on projects such as the redevelopment of Downtown Lisle and the creation of the Ogden Corridor Master Plan, for which he was a strong advocate," the village statement said. "He was respectful in all his interaction with residents, Board, and staff. Joe had a sense of humility and certainly a sense of humor. He will be greatly missed."

No information about funeral services has been released, but the village's workshop meeting scheduled for Monday has been canceled and Lisle's municipal offices will be draped in bunting in Schmitt's honor.
