Geoffrey Petzel, a resident of Lake Zurich, announced his candidacy late in 2011, citing the inability of Washington to put politics aside and deal with the important issues facing every American. Petzel is focused on dealing with what he believes are the two most important issues facing Americans today- the economy and health care.

As a small business owner Petzel said he was faced with the challenge of rising health insurance premiums and lower revenues. He made a decision to suspend his health insurance to save money.

“In August, I was faced with a decision that millions of Americans must deal with every year. When I suffered a massive heart attack, I had to make a choice between life-saving medical care and a mountain of debt. No person in America should have to make that decision. We must treat health care as a right, not a privilege,” Petzel said in a statement.

On Jan. 21, Petzel was one of , competing for the chance to take on incumbent 6th District Congressman Peter Roskam. Leslie Coolidge, a certified public accountant from Barrington Hills and Maureen Yates, a Barrington resident, also participated in the debate. Cary's Tim Ritter was not in attendance.
