Thursday Night Crash Leaves Five Juveniles Injured; One Charged with DUI

Naperville police are investigating an evening crash that blocked traffic Thursday from about 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

A 15-year-old passenger of a vehicle involved in a Thursday night crash on Ogden Avenue was listed in critical condition around midnight on Friday.

The passenger, who was in a sport utility vehicle and is from Lisle, was airlifted from to Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago, according to a news release sent by the around 12:15 a.m.

He was one of five people who were injured in the accident, which occurred shortly after 5:30 p.m. near the intersection of Naper Boulevard and Ogden Avenue, said Naperville Police Cmndr. Dave Hoffman, during phone interview around 1 a.m. on Friday.

It was around that time that local police and fire departments were called to the scene, where they found that a 1994 Chevrolet Blazer and a 2004 Dodge Intrepid had collided.

The blazer was being driven by a 16-year-old boy, of , who was heading west on Ogden Avenue and trying to make a left-hand turn into the Mobil gas station on the southeast corner of the intersection, stated the release.

He collided with a 17-year-old, of Lisle, who was driving the Intrepid with a same-aged passenger. Both people in the Intrepid were treated and released at the scene.

A 16-year-old Naperville resident—a second passenger in the Blazer—remained at Edward Hospital around 1 a.m., Hoffman said. Police classified his injuries as non-life-threatening.

But the 16-year-old Naperville resident who was driving the SUV was treated and released. That same driver, who police did not name because he is a juvenile, was then arrested and charged with driving under the influence of drugs, failure to yield, operating an unsafe motor vehicle and several other graduated driver's license violations, Hoffman said.

The Naperville Police Department’s Traffic Unit, which is trained in accident reconstruction, responded to the scene to investigate. The roadway was closed until almost 9 p.m. Thursday.
