Police Department Announces Roadside Safety Checks on Dec. 23

Officers will focus on driving under the influence and other traffic safety issues along Route 53.

from the Village of Lisle Police Department

With the approach of the holiday weekend, the Lisle Police Department will conduct a Roadside Safety Checkpoint along Route 53 on the evening of  Dec.23.  Lisle Police officers will focus their efforts on DUI (driving under the influence) and other traffic safety concerns such as proper occupant restraint usage.

According to data from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the midnight to 3 a.m. time frame is the deadliest on Illinois roads.  Not coincidentally, the data also shows this time of day has the highest percentage of alcohol involvement and the lowest safety belt use.  For the past four years, 54 percent of drivers involved in fatal crashes during this time frame had been drinking alcohol.  The next highest time frame for drinking drivers involved in fatal crashes was 41 percent between 3 to 6 a.m.

The Lisle Police Department recommends designating a sober driver and not letting friends and family drive impaired.  Other important tips include:

  • Planning ahead and turning over car keys to the designated driver
  • Using mass transportation, or calling a taxi, friend of family member
  • Reporting impaired drivers observed on the roadway
  • Wearing a seat belt.

The law enforcement crackdown is funded by federal traffic safety funds through IDOT's Division of Traffic Safety, and will run concurrently with the media campaign reminding motorists "You Drink & Drive. You Lose."
