OMG PD: Doing Battle with Pamphlet Holder, Double Trouble, DWT Charge

GENEVA

A pamphlet holder in a Geneva hospital's front lobby was minding its own business holding pamphets.

But according to a complaint filed in the 16th Judicial Circuit court, George Ghawi, 35, of St. Charles “knowingly struck a plastic pamphlet holder on a counter top in the lobby of Delnor Hospital, causing the pamphlet holder to travel through the air and strike (the victim) in an unreasonable manner as to alarm (the victim) and provoke a breach of the peace.”

Ghawi was charged with disorderly conduct at around 1 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14. It has not been proven if Ghawi had anything against the pamphlet holder. He will be able to tell his side of the story Sept. 18 in Kane County Court.

LA GRANGE

A police officer was at a La Grange restaurant Aug. 24 when someone approached him to report two turkeys were locked in the parking garage of Grayhill Inc., 561 W. Hillgrove Ave. When police arrived on the scene, the garage was locked, and they did not hear or see anything. They were unable to contact anyone at the company. 

Police got a second complaint that two birds, possibly pheasants, were locked in the parking garage. Police this time successfully contacted garage staff who said they would leave the garage door open for a while so the birds could leave.

Where the turkey or pheasants came from is a mystery. 

DOWNERS GROVE

Downers Grove police were at a man's car handdcuffing the man on a charge of having a possible fraudulent handicapped placard when they noticed a loaded handgun magazine in the side pocket of the driver's door, according to a police report. With the man's permission, a .38-caliber handgun was recovered from the vehicle. The gun was loaded with one round of ammunition, and there were six rounds in the magazine, police said.

Police charged him with one count of unlawful use of weapons for carrying a loaded firearm in a vehicle in addition to the original charge.

GLEN ELLYN

A thief must have been in serious need of barbecue recently. Someone stole a grill from the yard of a resident in the 400 block of Stagecoach Run. Police said the resident reported the theft of the backyard grill at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 26. To add insult to injury, the grill didn’t belong to the owner. The grill was on loan from the Glen Ellyn Park District.

ELMHURST

Lizette Soto, 19, 1029 W. Irving Park Road, Bensenville, was arrested and charged with speeding at 12:09 a.m. Aug. 26. Police said she was driving a black Acura 104 miles per hour in a 50-mph zone. She was pulled over at Route 83 and Lake Street. She was released on bond.

ST. CHARLES

Officer: "Sir, why did you drive over the center line three times?"

Driver: "Because I was texting."

Officer: "What are you doing now?"

Driver: "Texting."

YGBKM

Bernabe Cortes, 33, of Sycamore was charged at 9:12 p.m. Aug. 22 in St. Charles with driving while texting, no valid driver’s license, driving an uninsured vehicle and improper lane use. Police said they saw Cortes driving over the center line three times and pulled him over. He told police he had crossed the center line because he was sending text messages on his cellphone. Police said he was texting when the officer approached the vehicle. Cortes posted bond, and was told, "CUL." He has a Sept. 20 court date.
