A 53-year-old Geneva man is dead after he shot himself in a car parked at the Fabyan Forest Preserve on Wednesday, officials said.
The man was in his car at about 8 a.m. in a parking lot at the Fabyan West Forest Preserve, 1925 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva. He contacted police before the shooting, said Laurie Metanchuk, director of Community Affairs for the Forest Preserve District of Kane County.
"The (Kane County) Coroner's Office indicated that the person died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound," Metanchuk said.
Residents on the nearby Fox River Trail saw police, yellow police tape and a Coroner's Office van in the forest preserve after the shooting occurred.
Further information was not immediately available on this incident.
This is the second death investigation in as many years at the Fabyan Forest Preserve. On April 6, 2011, the body of a 31-year-old Batavia man was found off the east bank of the Fox River near the footbridge in the preserve. No foul play was suspected in the man's death.
