Hey Mom and Dad, When Should You Let Your Daughters Start Wearing Makeup?

Parents, Patch wants to hear from you on the questions that get families talking.

Welcome to "Hey Mom and Dad"—a weekly feature in which we ask our Facebook fans to share their views on parenting. Every week, we get the conversation started by taking a look back at a question we asked parents the week before on Patch Facebook pages from around the area.

Girls have been sneaking makeup past parents for generations. They'll wait to get to school to put it on, and wipe it clean away before they dare step back in the house. It's an issue that's not likely to go away any time soon. That got us wondering when girls should be able to stop sneaking around and openly wear makeup.

At what age is it appropriate for girls to start wearing makeup?

Take a look at what people had to say and join the conversation in the comments section.

Matthew Browne: I don't think there is a particular age. The way I see it, teach them self respect when it comes to looks. Makeup is something I've always seen as a privilege earned once a certain level of maturity and responsibility is shown by the child. If you can see those things in your child, and you think she can handle herself without being too easily influenced by today's destructive social media, then she is ready. If your child is one of those girls who follows up on every celebrity trend and worries too much about being the popular girl in school, then maybe she needs to wait awhile longer. — Batavia Patch Facebook

Cheryl Moss: Letting her experiment is a great way to help her not go overbored when shes in public. Also its important mom interacts with her when it comes to make up. Youtube is a great learning tool for mom and daughter fun. As far as age, most girls start around their first dance. — Elmhurst Patch Facebook

Susie Richter Adams: I would say 7th or 8th grade....Only mascara maybe a little blush and lip gloss. Nothing heavy. Teaching them to take care of their skin before puberty is probably more important. — Geneva Patch Facebook

Stephanie Webber: High school. — Lisle Patch Facebook

Karyn McGuire Kudrna: Depends on the girl. 14ish. — Naperville Patch Facebook

Tracy Paddy: Depends. I think they need to experiment with it at home before heading out of the house. Lip balm or glass in middle school, some mascara if they like that. The other things like eye liner can begin in high school. — St. Charles Patch Facebook

Sue Stozek Mayeda: 12, if they are resposible enought to remove it at night also. — Wheaton Patch Facebook

So what's your take? Tell us in the comments.

I'm in middle school and high school next year. Most girls even started wearing makeup in 5th grade. Just lip gloss and mascara. But in 6th grade it actually matters to keep your friends sounds stupid right? It is. But they may act rude if you say no, because they are risking losing their friends or maybe a crush. In 7th grade (I have acne kinda bad) I mostly covered up blemishes with foundation and cover up. And some mascara with LIGHT eyeshadow. And in 8th grade anything goes. So if they show responsibility and if they can do it themselves why not? If it makes them happy.

Does this surprise anyone? We are studying this, looking at it, we understand, please bear with us.Read More Readers, see the article in the Daily Herald of June 19th, 2013 "Naperville Increases Funding to Prevent Sewage Backup". They seem to be able to move quite quickly, not only on sewage backup issues but also storm water management. Why is there a delay in our village? Why are there lack of answers? Where is the leadership? Storm water management is not a sexy topic, but an obligation paid for by taxpayers, for the benefit of said taxpayers and due them from this village.

Did you see the new blog post about Lisle staff giving themselves $$$ bonuses and time off for theirRead More exemplary flood response services?

there. We checked with OSHA, there is no such violation. Lies, lies, lies. If they let you in theRead More back room you'd see the horrific, cruel conditions in which those dogs/puppies are housed. The puppies and dogs inside Puppy (Mill) Parlor are NOT rescued dogs. They do NOT hold "Adoption Events." They are NOT a rescue. They are NOT a 501c3 organization. If they were, Tammy Coglianese would have a Tax ID number issued by the IRS. She doesn't have one! They sell sick and dying puppy mill puppies to unsuspecting customers who believe they're being told the truth. They'll tell you anything you want to hear, lie right to your face, in order to get their hands on your credit card. And being "licensed by the Dept of Ag" means absolutely nothing. Puppy mills are also licensed by the DOA. And as if that's not enough, Puppy (Mill) Parlor was listed on the Horrible 100 Puppy Mills in the United States. They're the ONLY pet store in the entire U.S. listed in the report! Google it and see for yourself. Go to a shelter, or a rescue. There are even breed-specific rescues out there. If you're looking for a Schnauzer, Google: "Schnauzer rescue Illinois" and lists of Schnauzer-only rescues will pop up. If you buy a sick and dying puppy from Puppy (Mill) Parlor, you'll spend thousands in vet bills and most likely the dog will die anyway. We've heard from many, many people who've had exactly that happen. If you've purchased a dog from this hell hole, go to the Companion Animal Protection Society (CAPS) website at caps-web.org and complete a pet purchase complaint form.

You can be JUST within the DOA's guidelines and still found acceptable, doesn't mean it ISRead More acceptable. Selling dogs in a store to the DOA has the same guidelines as raising and selling of cattle. Why were you thrown out of the AKC, or did you forget to mention that the biggest dog canine association in the COUNTRY even disowned and distanced themselves for you? Why won't you show people what's in the back room if you have nothing to hide? Leave the door open 24/7 if you have nothing to hide. You stated in your so called "interview" it was against OSHA rules and regulations, once again a lie. If you only breed yorkies "now and then", where do the other dogs come from? I have no doubt you love dogs, why not they make you money. If you really loved dogs, you would treat them a heck of a lot better than you do. Where do the dogs in the back room get exercise? They are never walked or given exercise! How cruel! Why did the hair salon next door leave and why is there records of the two of you fighting over the stench that drove her business away? Why do you and your "workers" have to swear at the protesters, worse yet, in front of children? Why do you flip off kids that are out there? Why does the store front have to look like a junk store constantly? Where did you dumpster dive that "adoption" sign you had? Oh that's right, Petco, never mind. Wonder if they knew you were using their trademarked sign? Why aren't the dogs records directly next to the dogs that being sold? As for the "rescue" dogs, when they come from your back store pit, the only reason those would be rescues is because they are finally getting released from that place! You're telling people you're working with rescues, WHAT rescues? NAME them! Oh that's right, you can't. Just more lies! How do you sleep at night Tammy while all those dogs lie in those cages crying at night, peeing and pooping on each other? Sick, just sick! But as they say, every dog has their day.

"All puppies I sell or rescue dogs that I arrange adoptions for are up to date on all necessaryRead More vaccinations for their age including Rabies shot. The puppies have a health guarantee until their first birthday for any genetic abnormalities." What tests are being done to ensure the genetic health of your dogs? A vet check is not a health guarantee. Most genetic conditions don't start to show until a dog is at least 2 years old. Actual genetic testing can sometimes be expensive. Are your dogs getting knee, hip, eye, etc tests by a certified organization such as OFA, and you can show proof of it?

A lot of people losing their homes down on 53 and going bankrupt. Your business must be thriving.Read More Okay, see that was personal comment. It's a shame you are involved in any group that influences what goes on here. West Suburban supports the protests btw. Some came to a town hall meeting to voice their opinion on the subject of the puppy mill parlor.Their comments fell on deaf ears like yours...

Patch posts mugshots as part of reporting on police actions. We can never be paid to removeRead More mugshots, and thus are not an "extortion website." We can always update articles and report on future developments in the adjudication process.

kindly directed at the editor~ Sorry Mr. Editor, you will get no Mia culpeas from me. I findRead More your practice of posting large head shots on this site appalling and yes it's definitely a form of cyber-bulling and possibly putting innocent people's identity at risk. Other neighboring suburbs post the local police reports without the need of a picture. Many local area Patch.com sites post the names , their offense and where he/she was apprehended. That is sufficient. But as I observed under the previous editor, not only did the Lisle Patch allow one to read the names, offenses and location as provided by the Lisle Police. The Patch website also included pictures, ages and addresses of those cited. Thats when the Patch crossed the line. I'm sure you're aware of internet catfishing. You know where one's picture can be lifted and reposted elsewhere without their knowledge or consent. While I am thankful that you do not ask for monies to remove headshots , how can you guarantee the citizens of Lisle will not become victims of these other parasite websites? Yes, these folks may have used poor judgement . But sometimes nice people do stupid things. Hopefully it's a one-time incident. As much as I believe in the First Amendment , I believe a responsible editor balances FOIA with a person right to privacy. Who wants their children , neighbors , minister or potential employer finding one's headshot on a website like this. Especially should the case be thrown out and/or the person is found innocent. If Springfield legislates this correctly I would hope that you could not post pictures and other identifying information unless the person is found guilty.

Yet, the State of Illinois proposed its own "Tollway Website of Shame"?! Those that votedRead More against the tollway website of shame cited that people could get named on the site even if someone else was running up fines with their car.
