LUMINOUS SPRING 50 photographs by Peter Vagt

St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Glen Ellyn celebrates the
opening of an art exhibit Luminous Spring
50 photographs by Peter Vagt  on April 25th. The community is invited to the
Opening Reception and Artist’s Talk at 7:30 pm.
Light refreshments will be served.
The exhibit runs from April 25 through May 31.  The exhibit's hours are Tuesdays, 9-4,
Wednesdays, 9-7 and Thursdays 9-4.  There
will be a second Artist’s talk on Thursday evening May 8 th at 7:30.

Peter’s photographs include painterly light-filled The Morton
Arboretum scenes and abstract reflections of the waters of the Chicago
River.  Peter is a three times
featured-artist at The Arboretum Store and his exhibit will include thirty of
his The Morton Arboretum landscapes.  On
their website, the 1,700 acre Arboretum comments: "Peter Vagt  creatively captures the atmosphere of his
settings, turning Meadow Lake into a moody, contemplative space and a stand of
pines into an outdoor cathedral".

Luminous Spring features Peter’s The Morton Arboretum photographs
lining the walls of St. Mark’s nave and sanctuary.  Around the corner from the Nave, in Mahon
Hall, the exhibit will include the artist’s most recent work, twenty abstracts
of light reflecting off the Chicago River.
The entire collection in both locations focuses on nature subjects and
the light within the picture rather than the subject itself.  The differences between these two groups of
prints create an interesting contrast and complement for visitors to enjoy and
consider.

Peter Vagt, Ph.D., photographer and environmental scientist,
resides in Wheaton, Illinois.  He sees
his art and scientific work (geology and hydrogeology) as overlapping contexts
that began in childhood.  "Growing
up on a farm in southwest Minnesota my life happened outdoors.  Every day I climbed trees, did outdoor
chores, felt the exhilaration of running, climbing, walking, sensing and
seeing.  Then and now I take pictures to
capture the essence, not of what a place looks like, but what it feels like to
be there.  The reason I take pictures,
and I take hundreds every year, is that I’m looking for the spot and for the
moment, a split-second when what I’m seeing and sensing seems to transcend the
physical world.  For me those moments offer
a transcendent view of reality, the idea and belief that there’s a greater
reality beyond the five-senses limit of our physical world.  When I anticipate a moment like that, I take
a picture.  Once in every few hundred, or
thousand, clicks of the shutter, I’m amazed that what I sensed in that moment
is now here on the screen, or in the print".
