Shop Pink in DuPage County to Benefit Breast Cancer Awareness

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which means a variety of pink products will be hitting the shelves. But, do your pink purchases always go towards the cause?

A wave of pink is flooding stores everywhere, as retailers participate in Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For the savvy shopper, it's an opportunity to donate to a good cause while snagging unique, pink-hued items.

Here are a few local places offering pink products:

  • Sweet Ali’s in Hinsdale is joining the cause to raise breast cancer awareness throughout October. Each week, the bakery is featuring pink-themed sweet treats and a pink-stickered special product, with a portion of the proceeds being donated to the Breast Cancer Outreach Fund of Hinsdale Hospital Foundation.
  • Tavoos Skin Care and Halotherapy in Glen Ellyn is offering a special on a first time Halotherapy service. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, first time halotherapy clients will receive $15 off.
  • White House Black Market, with locations in Burr Ridge, Naperville and Wheaton, has special items such as inspirational T-shirts and bracelets available for sale with a portion of proceeds benefiting Living Beyond Breast Cancer. Click here for more information.

But before you plunk down your green for some pink, the nonprofits behind Breast Cancer Awareness Month want you to check the label.

Jenna Glazer, director of development for Young Survival Coalition (YSC), a global organization dedicated to helping young women who are diagnosed with breast cancer, said that buyers should be on the lookout for a label or tag that tells where the money from the purchase goes.

"If you walk into Bed Bath & Beyond and see something with a pink ribbon and no information about where the money is going, chances are it doesn't benefit the cause," she said.

Glazer said the best way for consumers to ensure that pink products are legit is to visit the non-profit's website for a list of its partners. YSC, which is based in New York City, lists Oakley, Nutra Nail, Liv/giant bikes, Ford and Urban Outfitters as some of its partners.

The amount of money donated to the nonprofit is also key, Glazer said. With YSC's partnership with Oakley, for instance, $20 from each pair of sunglasses goes right to the nonprofit, which offers resources, connections and outreach to young women with breast cancer.

And for a group like YSC, which is on the smaller end of the spectrum of breast cancer awareness groups such as Susan G. Komen For the Cure, the check it receives is just part of the benefit. Each time YSC partners with a company, Glazer said, "It raises the profile of nonprofit and gets the word out to the people who need us."

Here are a few pink products available online that breast cancer nonprofits are putting their names behind:

  • The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) has partnered with Barnes & Noble, which is offering a pink leather Nook cover with a stitched ribbon for about $35, with $5 going to the foundation.
  • Susan G. Komen for the Cure sells its own official merchandise on its website. It has pink leather business card holders for $15 each, as well as candles, coasters, neckties and car accessories.
  • Hard Rock will celebrate its thirteenth season of Pinktober with a variety of merchandise, including a pink honeycomb robe for $80. 75 percent of the profits from each item sold goes to the Caron Keating Foundation.

Some retailers don't enter contracts with nonprofits but still donate a portion of their proceeds. Team Cheer, a website that offers gear for cheerleaders, is donating 5 percent of its pink profits to BCRF. From socks to bows to briefs, the company's Cheer for a Cure collection includes products from $5 to about $25. You won't see it advertised on the BCRF website, but according to foundation staff, Team Cheer has made donations for the past two years.

If you think a pink product is suspicious or you are wondering about the relationship between the company and the cause, give the non-profit a call. Representatives are usually happy to verify whether a company is really giving.

"I've actually gotten Google alerts and seen people say they are partnering with us and they aren't," Glazer said, adding that she follows up on those alerts and asks for a check from the retailer that made the claim. Sometimes, she said, retailers were unaware that they needed a contract with YSC and will send along the check happily.

But in some cases, she said, "I never hear back from them."

THEN SHOW US THAT BACK ROOM! And not just once. We all know about how the Department of AgricultureRead More classifies pets and the sub-standard housing and feeding requirements they have. Anyone who purportedly loves animals and rescues them would know this and aspire to rise above the bare minimum requirements an offer these companion animals some comfort. Yes, we have heard about your so- called adoption and the procedures for getting your so-called adoptable rescue dogs. Basically, just go to the so-called foster's house fill out some paperwork and get your dog that same day. Hmmmm... pretty shady indeed and anyone who uses the term "rescue" when they are keeping animals in these sub-standard conditions is the lowest of the low. No rescue on earth would work with you or should I say no legitimate rescue would work with you.....

Back room of the Puppy Parlor
Roseanne Lynch June 18, 2013 at 12:22 pm
I have watched this protest unfold and watched these postings intently. This is a seriouslyRead More degenerating strip mall. The restaurant on the end has been empty for most of the past 4 years, the gas station is closed and fenced. It has nothing to do with Puppy Parlor or your protests. I have wondered how much of your protest is issue-based and how much is personal and from the postings in response to mine I can see that it is just personal. Being a Lisle business owner myself and being a curious and intelligent person I have checked the facts on this place of business and even though you all consistently call for complaints to be made there are none at this time. The owner has cooperated with the Illinois Department of Agriculture and there have been no citations. There are many people with happy, healthy dogs from Puppy Parlor, many more than have been sold "sick and dying" dogs. Unfortunately that happens but it would not be better if these dogs were taken to a shelter. I would truthfully be appalled if the Mayor were to stop a legitimate business from operating just because a few people don't like the owner of the business. Believe me, I do not like the owner either. I went there 4 years ago to purchase a Maltese puppy and I thought she was actually overbearing in her protection of the puppies. I purchased a dog elsewhere and that was my choice but I do respect the right of a business owner to operate a legitimate business and I do respect the other business owners and the Landlord of the property also. As far as your group getting grants to help put this woman out of business...seriously, what about a grant (or donation to West Suburban Food Bank) for the 100 or children who go to bed hungry every night in the Lisle-Woodridge area?
Rita June 18, 2013 at 09:07 pm
First off Roseanne, LW was being sarcastic about grants. If a grant were issued anywhere in LisleRead More at this point, it should go to the victims of the Lisle Floods. But that's an entirely different issue. I'm appalled to see a business in Lisle would support this type of business pushing another business "Best Little Hair House In Lisle" out of business because of her lack of hygiene with these poor dogs. Oh and btw the owner of Weldon's is behind what we're doing. He realizes what is going on in that place is wrong. Why, as a business owner, do you not realize this isn't good for our town? One side of the street we have a psychic the other a puppy mill. Oh and one other thing you may not be aware, that entire mall is in foreclosure, LONG before the protesters have been there. The protesters have nothing to do with Vinny's closing, or the resale shop that was there. I've actually started supporting Johhny's Hot Dogs since this has started because I don't want to hurt his business. He's a great guy. The only other business in that mall is a nail shop, which there's one on just about every corner in Lisle and a dance studio, that I guarantee was closer to the puppy mill, would want them gone too. Have you noticed how long the store front next door has stood empty Have you asked why? The Mobil was unkempt for ages and the village wanted them gone forever too, didn't fit into their idea of what downtown should be or look like.....the deterioration of downtown Lisle has more to do with the "restoration" of downtown that makes people avoid the area because of the congestion, and the construction for ages, it had nothing to do with the protesters of the puppy mill. The deterioration of downtown has been for years, not just the past six months. Put the blame where it belongs, not where you'd hope it to be.

Patch posts mugshots as part of reporting on police actions. We can never be paid to removeRead More mugshots, and thus are not an "extortion website." We can always update articles and report on future developments in the adjudication process.

kindly directed at the editor~ Sorry Mr. Editor, you will get no Mia culpeas from me. I findRead More your practice of posting large head shots on this site appalling and yes it's definitely a form of cyber-bulling and possibly putting innocent people's identity at risk. Other neighboring suburbs post the local police reports without the need of a picture. Many local area Patch.com sites post the names , their offense and where he/she was apprehended. That is sufficient. But as I observed under the previous editor, not only did the Lisle Patch allow one to read the names, offenses and location as provided by the Lisle Police. The Patch website also included pictures, ages and addresses of those cited. Thats when the Patch crossed the line. I'm sure you're aware of internet catfishing. You know where one's picture can be lifted and reposted elsewhere without their knowledge or consent. While I am thankful that you do not ask for monies to remove headshots , how can you guarantee the citizens of Lisle will not become victims of these other parasite websites? Yes, these folks may have used poor judgement . But sometimes nice people do stupid things. Hopefully it's a one-time incident. As much as I believe in the First Amendment , I believe a responsible editor balances FOIA with a person right to privacy. Who wants their children , neighbors , minister or potential employer finding one's headshot on a website like this. Especially should the case be thrown out and/or the person is found innocent. If Springfield legislates this correctly I would hope that you could not post pictures and other identifying information unless the person is found guilty.

Yet, the State of Illinois proposed its own "Tollway Website of Shame"?! Those that votedRead More against the tollway website of shame cited that people could get named on the site even if someone else was running up fines with their car. And Illinois website would also be an "extortion-style" site where people have to pay to get their name removed from the website. http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20130604/news/706049727/
