Oktoberfest Fundraiser

St. Joan of Arc Celebrates Oktoberfest

For its fifth consecutive year, on October 1, St. Joan of Arc parish will transform its gymnasium into a quaint Bavarian village for an Oktoberfest celebration. German beer and food, German chocolate martinis, German music, and dancing are all on the menu for a reasonable cost. Raffle tickets will be available to win a hand-crafted quilt made by a local quilter.  The event will also feature a Chinese raffle for up to eight donated gift baskets, and later in the evening, the exciting show band “Tribute” will provide 60’s and 70’s music for dancing. See www.tributeonline.com for more information about this talented band.

Oktoberfest is open from 5:00 to 10:30 p.m. to adults 21 and older.  Tickets are available for $5.00 per person, (or buy 5 tickets and get one free) at the French Market in Lisle on September 24 and October 1, or at the door.

The event is a fundraiser for Upendo Village in Naivasha, Kenya, which serves more than 3,500 individuals and families touched by HIV and AIDS, providing them with nutritional programs, health care, testing and counseling, sponsorship of children, emergency services, support groups, home-based care, and a variety of income- generating activities.

From humble beginnings in 2003, Sr. Florence Muia, ASN (a native African Assumption Sister and 2005 Nobel Peace Prize nominee), has worked with the Wheaton Franciscans and missioners from the Diocese of Joliet who provide medical services and construction help, as well as social services and pastoral care.

Deacon Tom Richardt, director of St. Joan’s Social Justice and Peace Ministry and chair of the Oktoberfest event thinks the dual purpose of the event is ideal.  “Where else can you go for an evening of great German food and fun for a $5.00 donation at the door?  And it really makes the evening special to know that we are helping Upendo Village to continue its healing work with impoverished people affected by the scourge of AIDS. We hope the community will join us at this festive event.”
