Lisle Area Moms Use Craftiness for U.S. Troops

The homemade cards will be used by soldiers overseas.

On Oct. 4th, four moms spent a few hours making homemade cards with donated supplies for Cards for Soldiers. Sixty red, white and blue cards celebrate Veteran's Day. The cards were embellished with messages such as "Proud to be an American," flags and maps of the United States.

"My father is an Army veteran, and although he served in peace time, we were always taught to respect and be thankful to all of our military members for the sacrifices they make everyday. We pray for our soldier's safety and wish them a speedy return to their own loved ones," said participant Darlene Horvath.

The ideas was championed by Stephanie Trussell, who found the program.

"I realized I had alot of extra cardstock, so I looked for ways to use it," said Trussell. "I knew someone would have already been doing something. The hard part was done, I just had to find people to help make the cards."

Cards For Soldiers was started by the staff at 123 Scrap, who wanted to create homemade cards for military personnel serving in the Middle East. Except instead of addressing letters to the soldiers, these cards are used by soldiers to send to their own friends and family.

With the Veteran's Day cards, each will have a message of support and encouragement included from the makers.

Veteran's Day card donations will be accepted until Oct. 16. There are guildelines for submission on the Cards for Soldiers blog. One of the more notable rules is no use of glitter, because it gets caught on the soldiers' bodies and clothes and is reflective at night.

This group of moms, led by Stephanie Trussell, will meet to create Christmas cards in the coming weeks. Those interested in joining should email Trussell at thaddeusmom@sbcglobal.net.
