Check Out These Big, Beautiful Flakes From Friday's Snowfall

The National Weather Service explains the snowflake size was "quite large" Friday and there is a reason behind this.

We didn't get a lot of snow on Friday — but what we did get made for large snowflakes and a snowy landscape described as "sparkly." 

Many residents from the Chicago area commented on the beauty of the snow Friday on the ABC 7 Chicago Facebook page and Chicago meteorologist Tom Skilling's Facebook page. Some compared the snowy landscape to diamonds or crystals.  

The National Weather Service explains the snowflake size was "quite large" and there is a reason behind this. The National Weather Service provides the following explanation:

"With the atmosphere being supersaturated with respect to ice as indicated by model analysis, this was ideal for large snowflake growth.  Meteorologists refer to these larger snowflakes that originate within this temperature range as dendrites or plates."
