Welcome back, Patch Blogger!
Have you been bitten by the Pinterest bug? If you're a guy, the answer is likely no. If you're a woman, however, there's a distinct chance you've not only heard of it, but are likely in the throes of a great love affair with it. (That likelihood increases ten-fold if you're a crafter.) In case you haven't heard of Pinterest: the most succinct way I've heard it described is part social media, part virtual inspiration board. If you used to tear out pages of magazines for future reference, you already have the basic idea down. If you like something, you can 'pin,' or save it. You don't bog down …

Lisle Patch writers meet and speak a number of village residents, from government officials to business owners to incredible students. When our publication was just a few months old in December 2010, we included a summary of those notable people. So who makes the list in 2011? Click through the links below to our full stories. We always accept honor roll lists, athletic scores, and thank you's for volunteer time, but readers can also submit nominations for residents to profile in 2012. So if you have a quirky neighbor, a precocious student, know an avid volunteer, or someone in the village …
1. BNSF overpasses: It's usually when I'm on my way to a Patch editors meeting in a fellow commuter town that I come to appreciate the infrastructure that exists downtown Lisle. While Maple Avenue can get backed up at rush and a stream of cars pour from the Lisle Commuter Station, it's nothing compared to the agony of the wait in other places (most notably every time I order carry-out from Thipi Thai in Glen Ellyn, which can't be more than 100 yards north of the train tracks).    2. Bike trails: When I lived in Chicago, my bike was stolen from my building. While chained to a stairwell. I …
Look for me at the Lisle/Woodridge Business Expo from 1:30-3 p.m. today!   It wasn't a date for the history books, but is is a notable one for me: last year on Sept. 29, Lisle Patch officially 'went live' to the world. It started off with a story about a visiting firefighting student from Poland, District 203 Merit Scholarship semifinalists and volunteers that built Giant Steps a new playground in two days. I'm proud to say a year later, the site attracts thousands of readers each month. We've generated more than 1,800 articles, in addition to photos, videos and tons of comments. We want to …
A few residents reached out to me this week asking about the 'closed' sign on Big Apple Pancake House's doors. The restaurant is closed indefinitely, according to the DuPage County Health Department. A department spokesman confirmed the closing was voluntary. The yellow sticker on the door indicates to future occupants that the building will need to undergo department inspections before it can open to customers, he said. Still no word yet why they've closed. Follow Lisle Patch on Twitter or Facebook for updates to this story.
I've seen people milling in and out of the old Burger King building on Maple Avenue for the last few weeks, but no indication of its future use. Yesterday I got my answer: Firehouse. I made a call to the economic development office this morning, not realizing it was before they opened, so hopefully soon I'll have some more details about it. Until then, what do you think of the cuisine? How will it distinguish itself from the likes of Country House, Rayme's, or even its soon-to-be neighbor the Chill and Grill Restaurant?   UPDATED: May 4, 3:30 p.m.Owner Niketa Pettas, who also runs the Xando …
I've had the Terms of Use announcement up on the site this week because I think it's important to acknowledge a relationship that we haven't yet: reader to reader. Of course we encourage that every user posts with their real name, in an effort to reflect the physical community we're emanating here. But with Patch, like many other sites, liberties can be taken in identity. It's easy to tell when it's not a real name if it's something like Paul Revere or The Situation. It's not so easy to tell if it's John Smith or Bob. Bottom line: Those who use fake names, or no name at all, should …
Lisle Patch is barely three months old but we've met so many great community members already. The majority of them suffered through my long explanation of what Patch would be when it launched; others have been sources for our news stories. But a great many of them have been the news subjects themselves, and today I'm providing a definitive list of the people we got to know in 2010. The list was intended as a Top 10—one for almost every week of publication. But about one-fifth of the way through our 40-plus pages of news articles it occurred to me that 10 spots were far too few. Personally, I …
12:07 p.m.--much too late for breakfast, but who cares? I had been thinking of cinnamon rolls for approximately 13 hours, since I saw that they were available on the new Grounds for Hope Café's menu. I will confess: I have been hoping for a new favorite coffee shop since leaving Chicago. Logan Square's New Wave Coffee had everything I required in a hangout spot—free WiFi, chamomile tea, a "make yourself at home" atmosphere, free copies of Red Eye and the Onion, even video games. It's been difficult to find a suitable replacement. While the couches are outrageously comfortable at the Lisle …
Weather forecasters predicted the worst for Tuesday, but despite high winds, it was a perfect day to visit the Morton Arboretum. Some trees were injured, but for the most part the foliage survived. The Morton Arboretum posted some of their shots on Facebook; here are ours. Next week read our "virtual tour" of the Arboretum with plants manager Ed Hedborn.
Enjoy these shots through the week of Oct. 4 - 9. Families planning to take a gander through the Morton Arboretum this weekend found themselves with a bit of a wait time. Traffic packed the queue area from the ticket-taking booths to the edge of Route 53. Cars quickly populated the Visitor Center parking lot, and overflow fell to the Godshalk Meadow and Thornhill Education Center. Not only are locals packing in for the Fall Color Festival activities, which are held in the open area between the Visitor Center and Children's Garden, but this week the trees made dramatic changes. This is a …
Lisle Patch documents the changing leaves around the Morton Arboretum and Village of Lisle every few days. This is a process readers can join in! Send us shots of the changes you see around the village. Submit photos to karlie@patch.com and indicate when and where the picture was taken. We'll display your photos in the next update of Fall Tree Watch 2010! OR keep track of your own patch of trees throughout October and November, then send us photos of the scene in transition!Have a better name for this column? Tell us in the comments!
I can think of maybe one thing I love about fall more than the return of regular TV programming, and that is the season itself. It's the least expensive form of entertainment you can get. The heat dials down and the most routine surroundings morph from day to day. The change inspires action. Hikers, bikers, walkers and plain old nature lovers can't get enough; they get out. I grew up around wooded state parks, so I flock to the Morton Arboretum for a taste of home. Several times per week. The end of September has been particularly stormy and unreliable, and I found myself trapped in the …
Fall events are ramping up for the season. Where did the time go? This shot from the August Cruise Night beckons to the very first hint of fall, on a randomly cool week at the end of the month. The outdoor movie season and summer programs ended. Schools went into session, and the Downtown Business Council hosted the last of its monthly summer car shows. Since this Patch site had not yet launched, not having to cover these events as a reporter allowed me to experience them as a plain old resident, to enjoy a post-car show meal at Evviva and watch the trains go by in the twilight. It's good to …
Hello everyone, and welcome to Lisle Patch! What is it? A daily online information resource. To the right you'll find the welcome video I shot to explain our new role. The film crew and I weren't the only ones filming around town; prominent Lisle sites and figures also grace the village's new welcome video, which debuted at a village hall meeting earlier this month. This is the first time you're seeing Patch, but a lot of work has already gone into the site this summer. Gearing up for launch meant spending roughly two months compiling our directory and introducing ourselves around town. It …
