The treasurer’s Unclaimed Property Division has $1.5 billion in cash, plus contents from Illinois bank safety deposit boxes that have been abandoned for at least five years. The Cash Dash program helps reunite owners with their unclaimed property. On average, the Cash Dash program returns about $80 million dollars annually to owners. It’s common for people to lose track of their assets when they move or when loved ones pass away. Businesses and banks are required to turn over unclaimed accounts to the treasurer’s office.
Some examples of unclaimed property currently held by the treasurer’s office include the following:
- Money in inactive savings and checking accounts,
- Unpaid wages or commissions,
- Stocks, bonds and mutual funds,
- Money orders and bill overpayments,
- Paid-up life insurance policies and
- Safety deposit box contents.
To find out if you have unclaimed property through Cash Dash, you can visit the treasurer’s Web site treasurer.il.gov and follow the Cash Dash link. You also can contact the Unclaimed Property Division by calling 217-785-6998 or emailing info@cashdash.net.

The skeptic in me comes to life, more so given birth by the "cash and dash" moniker that sounds so borderline corrupt much like "pay for play." I can see it now, come forward, present identification and somehow your name pops up as owing something. Much like the sting operations whereby criminals were told they won a prize and coming to recieve find themselves arrestted. Oh well, living in Illinois has made me take a hard second look at anything that has to do with money, the state and elected officails.

@ Dave, with over $72M in cash and stocks returned to Illinoisans between January and September of this year, the Cash Dash program is hardly corrupt or a scam. Furthermore, with over 217K Cash Dash inquiries during the same time period, not a single person was arrested, detained etc. There's nothing wrong with being skeptical, however Illinoisans need every penny they can get in their pockets. Please don't make uneducated references to a non-partisan program that would keep someone from retrieving any money or property they are entitled to. That's just irresponsible or does a disservice to your family, friends and neighbors.

Frank, you are right. This program is what it says. I have found relative's names on here and they did receive what was listed.
Dave, I understand your cynicism. Jack, happy that your owning a computer allows you to blither. Next time, say something.
