February Events at the Morton Arboretum

All that jazz! Inventive arrangements of jazz classics take the stage with the next installment of "Chamber Concerts." The Elmhurst Symphony Strings, a nine-piece ensemble from the Elmhurst Symphony, brings energetic works by great American composers, highlighting George Gershwin and Duke Ellington. Afterwards, mingle with the artists in the beautiful original library of Joy Morton. Cost: $28 (discounts for Arboretum members). All ages, Thornhill Education Center. February 6: 2:15 – 4:15 p.m.

Take a stroll through new areas of the Arboretum! Snowshoes and cross-country skis allow visitors to explore paths only open in the winter months. Bring your own or rent a pair of ours to explore quiet stillness of nature. Snowshoe rental is $8 for up to three hours, limited quantities. Snowshoes are rented only when there is at least four inches of snow on the ground. Visitors may also bring their own cross-country skis. All ages. As weather permits; rentals at Visitor Center from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

See live birds of prey up close in "Meet the Raptors!" Also, learn to identify raptor calls and which birds live in the Chicagoland area while touching raptor talons, skulls and feathers. Mother-daughter memories made at the "Just the Girls Snowshoeing Overnight!" Girls and the special women in their life spend a fun evening hiking in snowshoes, looking at winter's icy, cool wonders under a microscope and warming up by the campfire with cocoa and s'mores. Make your garden adaptable! Spend the afternoon with Jerry Milewski, Landscape Architect from American Gardens, learning about landscaping ideas for a changing climate with "Eco-Friendly Gardening Workshops." Take the whole family on a birding adventure! "Bird Watchers' Family Adventure" shows how to identify the colors and calls of songbirds that live in this area over winter. Why are hummingbirds never before seen in Illinois appearing in your backyard? Find the answers, and more, in "Breaking the Rules: The Secret World of Hummingbirds." Noted birding expert Denis Kania shares photographs and stories of hummingbirds from around the world. Cost: $18 (discounts for Arboretum members). Glaciers in Illinois? Find out about the formation of steep rock bluffs in the prairie landscapes of Northern Illinois. Learn from Columbia College professor David Dolak about the patterns and features the ancient ice formations left behind in "Glaciers in Your Backyard." Cost: $82 (discounts for Arboretum members). Walk through the grounds and your imagination! "Arbor Reading Adventures" entertains children with a nature-themed story and craft. Afterwards, they head out on the grounds for an energizing hike! Themes change each week. Costs $5 (discounts for Arboretum members) and regular gatehouse admission applies. Suggested for ages 3-5; adults must accompany children. Sterling Morton Library. Fridays through March: 11 – 11:45 a.m.

Magical creatures hiding in a mystical garden! Fairies and gnomes have snuck into the "Magical Winter Garden." Can you find all of them? Test your "I-Spy" skills with this fun outdoor activity.
